Virginia War Museum to Commemorate American Entry in WWI

United States Entered First World War April 6, 1917


The Virginia War Museum is holding a commemoration of the centennial of American Entry in the First World War at 12 p.m., Thursday April 6. The highlight of the commemoration is the unveiling of the display Old Dominion, Over There. This new exhibit honors Virginia’s military units that served in the war. The special exhibit will run through 2019. Following the unveiling, the museum is showing the 1925 silent WWI movie The Big Parade at 1 p.m. Read more...

City to Hold Healthy Youth Day & Summer Camp Expo at Patrick Henry Mall


Healthy Youth Day & Summer Camp Expo is back, next Saturday, April 8, from 1- 5 p.m. at Patrick Henry Mall. The event, put on by the Newport News Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism, promotes healthy living for youth and families while showcasing the varied summer recreation opportunities for youth in Newport News and surrounding areas.

Stop by the event at any time for a variety of healthy activities from food preparation to fun fitness. Read more...

Garden Plots Available in the Newport News Community Garden


The City of Newport News community garden has open plots available for Newport News residents. These plots are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To apply for a garden plot, read the Community Garden Rules and complete the Community Garden Application. There is a $30 fee to reserve a garden plot for the season and plots are approximately 18 by 40 feet in size. View a diagram of the garden plot layout and parking area online. Appropriations
At last night’s meeting, City Council appropriated more than $21.7 million for the following projects:
  • $175,000 for training and equipment purchases for the Police Department. These funds are from the Criminal Justice Training Academy fees which are collected by the Clerks of Courts. Read more...
  • $661,245 for parks projects. These funds, from the Parks and Recreation Category of this year’s Capital Improvements Plan (CIP allow the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism to undertake projects in several city parks. Read more...
  • $3,600,000 for Waterworks project in upper York County. This project involves the construction of approximately 18,900 linear feet of 24-inch diameter water main. Read more...
  • $17,325,688 for seven transportation projects throughout the City. These projects are through the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Revenue Sharing Program and require at least a 50/50 city/state match. Human Services Advisory Board holds Town Hall

I’m bored, what’s going on in Newport News?

 
The Newport News Department of Human Services Advisory Board is holding a Town Hall/Information session for youth and their families on Saturday, March 25th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center. With the theme of I’m bored, what’s going on in Newport News?, the session will look at how youth remain engaged and  involved in activities when they are out of school.
