Sleigh Hunger, Stargazing, Family Bonfire Night: 50 Historic Triangle events this week

This week brings stargazing, a bonfire night, summer concerts and a drive-thru food drive to the Historic Triangle. 


Habitat for Humanity Peninsula and Greater Williamsburg will host its Sleigh Hunger Christmas in July Food Drive on July 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Habitat ReStore in Williamsburg. 


The nonprofit organization aims to raise 10,000 pounds of food to benefit Greater Williamsburg families in need served by the Grove Christian Outreach Center. 


Suggested donations include non-perishable items such as hot and cold cereal, rice, canned fruit and vegetables, pasta and spaghetti sauce, soups and baby food. 


On the live music scene, the Sounds of Summer Concert Series returns with Tidewater Drive. The band brings audiences to their feet with energizing hits, bold brass and entertaining showmanship. 


Popular 80's band The Deloreans will perform in the Port Warwick Summer Concert Series, and Bruton Parish Church will host a Flute Ensemble Concert.


Other highlights this week include Family Bonfire Night at New Quarter Park, Stargazing at York River State Park, a free Wizard of Oz performance at Tabb Library and Trackless Train Rides at Warhill Sports Complex. 


The Merchant's Square Summer Movie Series returns Sunday evening with "Moana 2."

FILM

  • Cinema @ Scotland St.: "Cabrini" | Williamsburg Library | This series screens indie, foreign, art house and documentary films. This week's feature is "Cabrini" (2024, PG-13), based on the true story of Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini, an Italian emigrant who came to the U.S. in 1889 and founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart to help the impoverished. 2hrs 22min. KIDS

  • Watch & Play Movie: "Elemental" | James City County Library | This interactive, all-ages movie screening includes various fun activities to play along with the movie. This month's feature is Elemental (2023, PG). 1hr 41min. Free. 6 - 7:45 pm. 

YOGA

  • Community Yoga at the Watermen's Museum | Watermen's Museum | Enjoy the beautiful views of the York River while you stretch, strengthen and build your balance. Classes are beginner friendly and held outside April through September, weather permitting. Proceeds support the Watermen's Museum. $10 ($5 for students). 6 - 6:50 pm. 

TEENS

  • Intro to Yoga for Teens | James City County Recreation Center | Mondays, July 21 - Aug. 4 | Teens are invited to attend a series of yoga sessions designed to help support a meaningful, enjoyable life. This three-week class builds confidence and teaches yoga techniques as well as the value of mindfulness. For ages 13 - 16. Free. 6:30 - 7:30 pm.

KIDS & FAMILIES

  • Terrific Tuesdays | James City County Library | Kids will enjoy the summer sun after puppet storytime with lawn toys and other outdoor games. All ages; weather permitting. Free. 10:30 am - 12 pm. 


  • Chalk Art | Tabb Library | This Chalk Art Party will feature a variety of chalk-themed activities for the whole family to enjoy. Free. 10:30 - 11:15 am. 


  • Exploring Stormwater | Williamsburg Library | Educators from the James City County Stormwater and Resource Protection division will discuss stormwater and ways to prevent water pollution. For ages 7-12. Space is limited; reserve a ticket at the Youth Services desk starting 30 minutes before the program starts. Free. 2 - 3 pm. 


HISTORY

  • Poetry & Art | Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg | Attend a family-friendly tour where you'll explore galleries, explore the link between objects on exhibit and favorite poems, and participate in a poetry-writing activity. Free and open to the public. 11 - 11:45 am. 


  • Crack the Code | Hennage Auditorium | Colonial Williamsburg | Use secret messages to investigate Revolutionary War events and see if you can Crack the Code. Free and open to the public. 1 - 1:50 pm.


  • Works by Black Artists and Artisans | Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg | Attend a guided tour of the exhibit, "'I made this:' Works by Black Artists and Artisans." Free and open to the public. 2 - 2:30 pm.

  • Art House CafĂ©: "The Trip to Italy" | Williamsburg Library | This film series brings an art house film flavor to your Tuesdays. You'll meet fellow community members, hear from film experts and have a discussion after the film. This week's feature is "The Trip to Italy" (2014, NR). 1hr 48min. See the trailer here.   • Chris Campbell: Music for Kids! | Williamsburg Regional Libraries | Children are invited to enjoy an upbeat and interactive program featuring Chris Campbell, a singer, songwriter, musician and ventriloquist. Space is limited; reserve a ticket starting 30 minutes before the program begins. This event will be held at James City County Library from 10 - 11 am and Williamsburg Library from 1:30 - 2:30 pm

  • Toy Making! | Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg | Make a toy inspired by the objects on exhibit. Children must be accompanied by adults. Free and open to the public. 11 - 11:45 am. 

  • Family LEGO and Movie Night | Tabb Library | Build with LEGOs and enjoy refreshments while watching The LEGO Movie (PG-13). Free. Event runs from 4 - 7 pm; movie begins at 5 pm.

  • Rex Ogle Virtual Author Talk | Virtual | Attend an interactive, virtual visit by Rex Ogle, an award-winning author of nearly 100 children's books, comics, graphic novels and memoirs. For ages 6-12. Register here. Free. 4 - 5 pm 

HISTORY 

  • Explore the Declaration of Independence | Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg | Explore the Declaration of Independence through objects on exhibit in this guided tour. Free and open to the public. 2 - 2:45 pm. 

WELLNESS

  • Drumming for Wellness | Freedom Park | Become immersed in the rhythmic world of drumming and discover the power of sound and movement. No musical experience needed; instruments provided. For ages 14+. Free. 6 - 7 pm. 

THEATRE

  • Traveling Players: Shakespeare's Cymbeline | Kimball Theatre | One of Shakespeare's four romances, this play highlights the family of Princess Innogen as she fights her parents to marry for love. The epic tale features war, slander, mistaken identity, beheading and a final "recognition scene." Presented by Traveling Players, based in Tysons, VA. Recommended for audiences for ages 10 and older. 2hr 30min (includes intermission). Tickets are $20.


LIVE MUSIC

  • Port Warwick Summer Concert Series: The Deloreans | William Styron Square | Newport News | The Port Warwick Summer Concert Series runs every Wednesday through Aug. 27. A variety of local food vendors will be on site every week. This week's featured band is The Deloreans, an electrifying 80s cover group. Free. 6 - 9 pm.

  • Sleigh Hunger Drive-Thru Food Drive | Williamsburg ReStore | Habitat for Humanity will host its annual Christmas in July food drive on July 24. Their goal is to collect 10,000 pounds of food for families in need across Greater Williamsburg. Drive through and drop off nonperishable food items. 9 am - 3 pm. 

FILM

  • Throwback Thursday: "Emperor" | Williamsburg Library | This film series screens classic and contemporary movies for an adult audience. This week's feature is Emperor (2012, PG-13), based on actual events that unfolded following the surrender of Japan. 1hr 45min. 2 - 3 pm. 

BINGO

  • Hallmark Movie Bingo | Yorktown Library | Enjoy a Hallmark Movie Bingo featuring friendly competition and snacks. The theme is Christmas in July, and the selected film for this event is Christmas at Grand Valley (2018). No registration required. Free. 6 - 8 pm. 

LIVE MUSIC

  • Music By The Bay Summer Concert Series: Rhythm Project | Fort Monroe | Enjoy music by some of the region's most talented performers set against the backdrop of summer sunsets by the Chesapeake Bay. This week's featured band is Rhythm Project, a percussion ensemble. Free. 7 - 8 pm. 

  • Sounds of Summer Concert Series: Tidewater Drive Band | Riverwalk Landing | Yorktown's Sounds of Summer Concert Series runs every Thursday evening through August 14. This week, The Tidewater Drive Band returns with a show featuring powerful vocals, bold brass and high-energy hits. Free. 6:30 - 9 pm.

  • Organ & Voice Recital | Bruton Parish Church | Attend a recital presented by Sarah Taylor, soprano, George Revill, tenor, and Rebecca Davy, organ and harpsichord. Free; donations gratefully accepted. 8 - 9 pm.

  • Family Bonfire Night | New Quarter Park | Enjoy a fun, relaxing evening by the campfire featuring s'mores and an activity. This event is held on the 4th Friday of each month. Call the park at 757-890-5840 for details. Begins 30 minutes before sunset. Free

NATURE

  • Lost Lighthouse Kayak Tour | York River State Park | Kayak with park staff to Croaker Landing and discover the history of two lost lighthouses: Bells Rock and Pages Rock. Solo kayak $16/person, tandem kayak $11/person.  Prepayment required with reservation. 10 am - 12:30 pm. 

  • River Life | York River State Park | Visit live creature displays of fish and shellfish that were captured in the York River and Woodstock Pond. A ranger will discuss their role in the ecosystem. 1 - 3 pm. 

KIDS

  • Mad Science | Tabb Library | Kids will witness exciting demonstrations focused on sound, including the singing pipe, Dinosaur-in-a-can and a kid-created thunderstorm. Free. 10:15 - 11:30 am.

  • Bird Walk | New Quarter Park | Attend a bird park walk hosted by the Williamsburg Bird Club. Kids are welcome. Free. 8 - 10 am. 


  • Paddle the River | James City County Marina | Enjoy a paddle down Powhatan Creek during this event hosted by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation. Space is limited to 15 participants. Paddlers must be age 15+ and should be familiar with water safety. Tickets are $35/person and include kayaks, paddles and life jackets. 9 am. 


  • Bright Star Theatre: Wizard of Oz | Tabb Library | This 45-minute production offers a fast-paced version of the literary classic "Wizard of Oz." Presented by Bright Star Touring Theatre, a national professional touring theatre company based in Asheville, NC. Free. 10:15 - 11:15 am. 


  • Royal Artillery Demonstration | Yorktown Battlefield Visitors Center | 1000 Colonial Parkway | A series of artillery demonstrations will be held behind the Colonial National Historical Park Visitor Center on Saturday, July 26.  Participants will have the opportunity to meet re-enactors, learn about the weapons used during the American Revolution, and watch live cannon firings. Weather permitting. Demonstrations will be held at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. 


  • History of American Milestone Celebrations in Virginia | Williamsburg Library | Explore how localities across Virginia have celebrated major milestone anniversaries as we look forward to the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding. Presented by Peter North of the Library of Virginia. Free. 2 - 3:30 pm. 


  • Stargazing | York River State Park | Join the Virginia Peninsula Stargazers to observe different items of the solar system in the night sky. All equipment provided. Weather dependent. Included in park admission. 8:30 - 10 pm.

  • Yorktown Market Days | Riverwalk Landing | Enjoy beautiful views of the York River while shopping for a wide variety of items, such as seasonal produce, fresh baked goods, intricate glassware and beautiful woodwork. This week, Ami Baker will perform on the Riverwalk Landing Stage. Free admission. 8 am - 12 pm.


  • Williamsburg Farmers Market | Shop from the finest Virginia-grown and Virginia-made produce, plants and products. This farmers market features over 40 vendors, live music and children's programming. Rain or shine. Free admission. 8 am - 12 pm. 


  • Toano Open Air Market | 7891 Richmond Road | Toano | Shop from various vendors selling their finest products. Located on the Village Green near Hohl. Free admission. 9 am - 12 pm.
