Fifty attend Moth Night at New Quarter Park

July 27, 2012

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Members of the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists set up white sheets and black lights to attract spiders, moths, beetles and all sorts of bugs on Saturday, July 14, at four locations in New Quarter Park. About 50 people came out to see the tiny creatures of the night.
Guest speaker Teta Kain, naturalist and wildlife photographer, started off the evening by explaining that while the steamy summer night was uncomfortable to park visitors, it made for a great night for the moths and other critters. At 8:30 p.m., Kain presented large and colorful slides of moths from her backyard to show visitors what they might expect to see. Later in the evening, the crowd oohed and ahhhed as they found some of the same moths she had discussed.
New Quarter Park is a 545-acre preserve with hiking and biking trails, disc golf course, and picnic shelters in upper York County near the Queen's Lake subdivision. Watch for nature programs, bird walks, kayaking, and recreation events at the park.
For more information or to add your name to the park's e-mail list, call York County Parks and Recreation at 757-890-3513 (Monday through Thursday) or the New Quarter Park office (Friday through Sunday) at 757-890-5840.
Volunteers with the Historic Rivers Chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalists help with many New Quarter Park programs that educate youth and adults and conserve natural resources. The local chapter is still accepted applications for a new Basic Training course to start in September. Email hrctraining@cox.net for more information and a schedule.

YCRC update - IMPORTANT DATES & EVENTS!

Good Morning, Everyone!

With the election only 3 ½ months away, it’s time to get trained and start working! (Believe me, the other side is already on the ground getting voters!)

Remember – the only way we can win in November is if we get off our couches, move beyond just talking, and start putting our boots on the ground for our candidates!

The YC Republican Campaign Victory HQ is located at 3630 George Washington Memorial Hwy. (Rt. 17) across from the reservoir and next door to ‘Vineyards Christian Fellowship’ church in the Pilgrim Village Offices (just north of Victory Blvd & Walmart). Look for the patriotic bunting beneath the top 3 windows & the YCRC sign above the doors, facing Rt. 17. The HQ phone # is 757-849-3235. Stop by to volunteer, pick up yard signs & lit, and check out this great office!

The time is NOW for you to help! WE NEED YOU – AMERICA NEEDS YOU!!

Call the HQ Coordinator Yvonne McCoy (898-6212) or the YC HQ phone (849-3235) to pick a time to come in to make calls. A Letter

The United States of America was founded on one basic Christian principle. God is our Father and we are charged to behave as His children. This basic Christian principle was scribed in our founding documents by asserting claim to certain unalienable rights, an obligation to our Creator and a concept of governance by the people. This is the "Good".

To be a warrior for "Good" you must know who or what your enemy is, the "Evil". If we hold that "Good" is self-governance in accordance with God's Will, would not tyranny by man be the "Evil"? It is important however, that one must not become an "Evil" warrior in the cause of "Good" by succumbing to an "end justifies the means" behavior. In the heat of battle this can be very difficult.

We have been a hundred years coming to this point in our country's history. Neither the Democrat nor the Republican establishments are the villains. They are merely the opportunists. "We the people" must look into the mirror to see the cause of our present chaos. We have failed in our responsibility to be a nation governed "by the people". We assert that we are "Independent" and seek the pleasure of the candidates for our vote. That is not how this nation's governance was created. There is no "Independent" position in our political system, or at least was not until 1913 and the destruction of the purpose of the Senate.

We are today engaged in a political struggle. We are in a war between those who believe God is their Father and King and those who aspire to rule as men.

That is what this election is all about.

BZA/BoE member selection process in York Cnty & throughout VA

Greg,
As my Senator suggested, this is an issue that could be taken up with the Cities & Towns committee if a good alternative is presented.  Would like to hear suggestions on new procedures.  I can understand that when the "appointees" are expected to make judgments on the actions of the "appointers" there can be an appearance of improper influence or quid pro quo concerns whether real or not.  I'll have to admit that I've not studied past actions so I can't make a judgment on that.  That said, legislators get their best ideas from citizens who have or are facing the issues.
From my limited Freshman point of view, I'd suggest that proposals for change should be run by all involved before coming to Richmond.  Local quarrels won't get much play in the House or Senate committees; just too easy to send back until some consensus is reached.  Must also consider that changes will have implications beyond one county.
I do appreciate your effort to make sure that citizens don't feel like they are wasting their time when "fighting City Hall" or Richmond or Washington for that matter.  We have a lot of fighting to do, especially in the next 4 months.
Mike

Subject: China Provision & BZA/BoE member selection process in York Cnty & throughout VA

Here is Senator Tommy Norment's open minded response that many of you did not receive.
GG

Senator Tommy,
Thank you for your response and consideration on this significant property rights/fair govt issue. I don't know the answer. However, anytime a BoS/City Council is selecting or recommending members for Boards that are set up to determine if their own County/City staff has made the correct decision that affects citizens, there is a high probability that insiders will be selected/recommended. This is not good for property rights & does not promote fair government. All we want are fair minded, knowledgeable, independent thinking citizens on these boards. What if our statewide elected officials chose them just like you choose judges? Aren't these boards set up to render opinions on individual situations like judges do?
GG

Bob,
Thank you for pointing out that we have this same scenario with the Board of Equalization.
GG

Brenda/Mike/Gordon,
Can you please weigh in on this issue?
GG

In a message dated 7/6/2012 7:53:31 A.M. Eastern Daylight Time,  Senator Tommy Norment writes:
I have never looked at this appointment process. Is it established by statute; and do you have an alternative approach. Appears to be an issue the Local Government Committees of the General Assembly could take up.
