Historic Yorktown Celebrates Arts Month with Yorktown Art Stroll

     The Yorktown Arts Foundation and York County invite the public to celebrate Arts Month in Yorktown with the first ever Art Stroll set for Sunday, Sept. 30, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 
     The stroll will feature over 20 local artists displaying their diverse visual arts work throughout the Historic Village of Yorktown and Riverwalk Landing.
     Beginning at 11 a.m., guests will receive a map showing all the locations where participating artists will be available to talk about their unique style and medium of artwork. Pick up a copy of the map at the Gallery at York Hall located at 301 Main Street, in the Yorktown Freight Shed at 331 Water Street or on the Yorktown trolley. Use the map to enjoy an early fall day with a walking tour from artist to artist or conserve your energy for the whole day's event by taking the trolley. Your connection to the visual arts by map and trolley will take you to amazing works of pottery, paintings, photography, fiber arts, music, woodturnings, jewelry, hand blown beads, baskets and decorative painted furniture.
     After the Art Exhibits close at 6 p.m., many of the local restaurants and shops will extend their hours for this special event so that you can enjoy an evening of fine dining and visit the specialty shops in the Village or just sit on a bench to view the scenery of the York River.
     Participating Yorktown businesses include: Hornsby House B&B, Custom House, Carrot Tree, Yorktown Shoppe, River Fruit Tropical Wines, Viccellio Goldsmith, Claire Murray, Riverwalk Restaurant, Yorktown's Charming Battlefield Cottage, Ben & Jerry's, Duke of York, Gallery at York Hall, Yorktown Victory Center, Nancy Thomas Gallery, Patriot Tours & Provisions, Southern Estates, Books & Antiques, and Swan Tavern Antiques.
     The event is free to the public. Free parking is available in several public parking areas throughout Historic Yorktown.      The Yorktown Arts Foundation began in Historic Yorktown in 1976 during the days of its early formation in a building called On The Hill, next to the existing new courthouse. The Yorktown Arts Foundation's primary mission is to provide arts education through presentations and classes and to provide venues for artist to show and sell their work.

Sharon Hrichak Update

Sharon Hrichak is home.  There is a fracture in the left-side of her pelvis, and a second fracture in her jaw.  It was determined she didn’t need surgery, so the hospital discharged her, yesterday.  

She can’t move to get up, and can barely move to sit up.  She is in excruciating pain, but does have pain medication.  Because she is pretty much confined to bed, her primary care physician is recommending a home health aide, nurse, or some assistance.  

They are pretty much taking it morning to afternoon, and George will let us know how/when anyone can help.

Prayers are most powerful, at this point.

YCRC - Prayers for Sharon Hrichak!

Hello, Everyone,
Many of you may have seen the news report of yesterday’s car crash in Newport News involving a suspect fleeing from police. (page 5 of today’s Daily Press) Unfortunately, the suspect was doing 70 mpg and hit Sharon Hrichak, York County Supervisor George Hrichak’s wife, on the driver’s side, causing her pelvic fractures along with bumps & bruises.  Sharon had just started feeling well after fighting breast cancer, so this setback is especially heart breaking and challenging.

Please keep Sharon in your prayers for healing and strength as she recovers and for George and their family in helping her by her side. Their son, George, is serving in the military and returned to Afghanistan this summer, so he will need your prayers, too, as he hears of his mother’s accident and injuries from so far away.

Labor Day Holiday

 

County Offices will be closed on Monday, September 3 in observance of the Labor Day Holiday.
 
The York County Waste Management Center including the Recycling Center, Transfer Station, Citizen Drop-Off and the VPPSA Compost Facility will also be closed in observance of the Labor Day Holiday.
 
Garbage Collection moves forward one day. Monday will be collected on Tuesday; Tuesday will be collected on Wednesday and so on until Friday's garbage collection is collected on Saturday, September 8th.
 
Recycling collection will remain unchanged. Place your bins at the curb by 7am on your normal recycling day to ensure collection.
 
All County Offices and facilities will resume normal scheduled hours on Tuesday, September 4.

York County Planning Commission Meeting - Sept 5th, 7PM

Planning Commission to hold Comprehensive Plan work session on September 5, 7PM

The York County Planning Commission will hold a work session at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5 for the purpose of discussing the Comprehensive Plan review and update.
The work session will take place in the York Hall East Room, located at 301 Main Street, Yorktown. The main topics of the meeting will be the Economic Development element of the plan and the master plan update for Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.
The Comprehensive Plan serves as the long-range plan for the physical development of the county. The Code of Virginia requires that comprehensive plans be reviewed periodically, and York County’s plan was last updated by the Board of Supervisors in December 2005.
All Planning Commission meetings and work sessions are open to the public.

York County wins three NACo Achievement Awards

     York County is pleased to have been recognized with three Achievement Awards granted by the National Association of Counties for various county programs and initiatives.
     "It is quite an honor to be recognized on the national level for programs that county staff has created and implemented," said County Administrator James O. McReynolds. "County employees work very hard to serve the citizens of York, and these awards are recognition of a job well done."

County News Minute
     In an attempt to capture the attention of today's citizen, deliver fast and easy-to-understand messages, and save staff time in the process, the York County Public Information Office, working cooperatively with the Video Services Division, developed the "County News Minute."
     These brief informational video segments are shown on the county's cable channel and YouTube channel and spotlight county programs, initiatives or services. Filmed on location, these segments deliver a clear, concise message, and take minor staff time to film and edit. In today's fast paced world, these segments quickly inform citizens about county programs and events, and are an extension of the county's communications program.
 
Automated Storm Surge Look-Up Tool
     As residents of this area are all too aware, York County is a "hurricane risk locality" faced with dealing with the impacts and effects of hurricanes during Atlantic Hurricane Season. To help citizens prepare for a potential hurricane, staff developed an "automated look-up tool" for storm surge zone risk determination. This tool is a simple, easy-to-use, automated method for citizens to determine their property's hurricane storm surge zone. 
     The tool consists of a link off of the county website to a .pdf street index file that includes the storm surge zone for every address in the county. The user simply has to click on the established link on the website, go to the "find" section on the document and then enter his or her address. The search will take them directly to their address listing and indicate their storm surge level. 
     The website address for this tool is www.yorkcounty.gov/fire. Select "York County Storm Surge Zones."
 
Don't Be A Drip Water Management Program
     The county's Department of General Services initiated a water management program to reduce the overall use of water by utilizing technology, improving design and applying best management practices for installing, modifying and maintaining county and school division irrigation systems.  
     Under this water management program, the Department of General Services began a program of converting manual hydraulic-type irrigation control boxes to digital controls with rain sensors, using technology to ensure the beneficial use of water and improving designs for current and future irrigation installations. The program's technology-based operations have resulted in considerable cost savings in terms of water costs, sod replacement costs (due in the past to overwatering), and costs associated with staff once required to manually assist with irrigation activities.

     The York County Public Library is sponsoring the Once in a Blue Moon Fine Amnesty Program to encourage patrons to return overdue materials.
     From Aug. 26 through Aug. 31, late fines will be waived on all books, DVDs, CDs and other items. Simply bring your overdue items and your library card to the Circulation desk to have the fine waived. The Once in a Blue Moon Fine Amnesty Program does not apply to charges for lost or damaged items.
     "This is a once in a blue moon opportunity for fines to be forgiven," said Kevin Smith, York County Public Library Director. "We have about 1,700 items overdue. When you return your overdue items, you ensure that everyone has access to the excellent books, DVDs and other items the library has to offer. I am surprised to hear that some patrons do not return items because of the fines they have accrued. Hopefully now the items will be returned."
     The Once in a Blue Moon Fine Amnesty Program coincides with the astronomical blue moon occurring on Aug. 31. Both the blue moon and the library waiving fines are rare occurrences.

Senior Center Announces September Programs

A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in September.  Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age.  The center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rt. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The center is closed all county holidays.  Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  To register, stop by the center or call 898-3807.  For more information, please visit www.yorkcounty.gov/communityservices.

"Let's Go to the Movies," Monday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. The York County Library and the Senior Center of York will present the Academy Award Winning movie "The King's Speech," (PG 13 version). This film is a 2010 British historical drama directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Colin Firth plays a stammering King George VI. He seeks help to deliver an inspirational radio broadcast from Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue, who is played by Geoffrey Rush. Popcorn and beverage served. AARP Driver Safety Program, Sept. 24 & Sept. 25. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, Sept. 24 from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is now $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members.Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
 
Fashion Show, The Fashion Elegantes, Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Come enjoy a fabulous fashion show with the latest fall fashions and vintage wear by The Fashion Elegantes. This group is a modeling club composed of mature models 50 years old and over through the Active Lifestyles Program of Newport News Parks and Recreation and Tourism. Long-Term Financial Planning, "Change, Cash, Currency," Thursday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m.  Andrew Rivenbark, Financial Advisor of the Towne Investment Group, will educate us on personal and business financial planning when considering investments, retirement, insurance and risk management. Mr. Rivenbark will also discuss a variety of plans that are especially beneficial for older adults. Light refreshments will be served at 9:30 a.m. Please register by Sept. 25.      
            
Computer General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities. Body Recall Exercise. Sign up today for Body Recall, a life-time fitness program with Instructor Domenica Jernigan. The 10-week fall session is scheduled to begin on.Aug. 29 and end on Nov. 9. Classes are held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Individuals may register for the 9 a.m., 10 a.m., or 11 a.m. class time. A Letter

                Chief Justice John Roberts in his" Obamacare" opinion, affirmed that the responsibility of governance in these United States of America is the responsibility of "We the people".  We have failed our governance duty. By this failure we have allowed both political parties for their own benefit to destroy the two important constraints upon the central government; the restriction on direct taxation and the sovereignty of the several states. (The 16th and 17th Amendments ratified in1913.) In the midst of the 1930's depression, the political parties further expanded the power of the central government with the New Deal and in 1937, the Supreme Court set aside the Constitution's concept of limited enumerated powers and the constraints contained in the 10th Amendment.

We have embraced the two great Ponzi schemes, Social Security and Medicare, which enrich the coffers of the central government and the Oligarchy that rules it. These schemes now double the revenue sources available to the Oligarchy without regard to the original purposes.

 We have allowed the creation of government employee unions that negotiate with the political arm of the Oligarchy for their benefit and the reciprocal contribution benefit to incumbent politicians with no consideration of "We the people".

We have allowed those who debase our Christian heritage to force us through litigation threat to deny our Creator and thereby strip us of our "inalienable rights ".

Are we not at a moment today, as we were as a nation some 149 years ago when these words echoed across a silent battlefield?  "- That this nation under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

Planning Commission to hold Comp Plan work session on Sept. 5

     The York County Planning Commission will hold a work session at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5 for the purpose of discussing the Comprehensive Plan review and update.
     The work session will take place in the York Hall East Room, located at 301 Main Street, Yorktown. The main topics of the meeting will be the Economic Development element of the plan and the master plan update for Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.
     The Comprehensive Plan serves as the long-range plan for the physical development of the county. The Code of Virginia requires that comprehensive plans be reviewed periodically, and York County's plan was last updated by the Board of Supervisors in December 2005.
     All Planning Commission meetings and work sessions are open to the public.

Paranormal investigators to speak at Yorktown Library

     Scott Spangler and his team from Southeast Virginia Paranormal Investigations will be at the Yorktown Library from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012.
     They will discuss the paranormal research and investigations they have performed at alleged haunted locations in Virginia. SVPI will also showcase some of the equipment they use in their paranormal investigations.
     "We had such a great response to Southeast Virginia Paranormal Investigations' program at the Tabb Library this summer that we wanted to have them visit the Yorktown Library," said Kevin Smith, York County Public Library Director. "The audience enjoyed hearing about the interesting places SVPI has investigated and the personal stories team members shared."

This fall's upcoming elections will, no doubt, be the most important in our lifetime.   After this election, our country will either head further down the road towards socialism or it will regain its footing and return to the principles that have made it the greatest nation on the planet.  We can either sit on the sidelines and hope for the best or we can get involved and try to make a difference.  For just $50 per person, you can spend the evening listening to one of Williamsburg's favorite son's, Drew Haynie, and his band Oldplay, drink beer and wine, enjoy great hors d'ouvres, and, if you need a cocktail, there will be a cash bar.   The Williamsburg Club is an enthusiastic supporter of Governor Allen and is going all out for this event.  There is only so much you can do to have an effect on the upcoming elections and this one night out in support of Governor Allen could make the difference.
 
This is not your typical stuffy, dry political gathering.  This is going to be a fun, lively event with good company, conversation, music, and food.  You'll get a chance to speak with Governor Allen, share your views on how he can fix this country, and write him a check so that he can pull ahead in what is sure to be a close election.  Many of you have attended our events in the past that were held for Ken Cuccinelli, Representatives Whitman and Rigell, our own Catesby Jones, and others.  We hope you can attend this event as well.
