York County Christmas tree recycling pickups to begin Jan. 3

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Christmas tree recycling in York County will take place from Monday, Jan. 3 through Friday, Jan. 14.

All York County residents are urged to have their trees at the curb where their trash is normally picked up by 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 3. This is important, because the tree pickup date won't necessarily coincide with residents' usual trash pickup dates. Trucks will fan out throughout the county picking up trees, so there is no guarantee which day they will visit certain neighborhoods.

After this two week period, trees will only be collected if citizens call in a bulk item pickup.

Call the York County Waste Management Division at 757-890-3780 for more information.

Be fire safe this holiday season

December 9, 2010

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Unfortunately, all that cooking, home decorating and entertaining leads to an increased risk of fire due to heating equipment. According to the National Fire Protection Association:
·         Between 2003 and 2008, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 260 home fires a year started by Christmas trees. These fires caused an average of 14 deaths, 26 injuries, and $13.8 million in direct property damage annually.
·         During 2003-2006, an estimated 14,800 home structure fires started by candles were reported to local fire departments.
·         Typically half of all home heating fires occur in December, January and February.

York County wants to help every household be prepared and safe during this winter holiday season. Please use these tips to keep your family safe this year:
  • When selecting a Christmas tree, be sure the tree's needles are green don't break easily. Older, dryer trees are a fire hazard.
  • When disposing of the tree after the holidays, never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood burning stove.
  • Inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires, bare spots, broken sockets and other wear and tear. Do not use them if they are damaged.
  • Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets together, unless directions indicate it is safe to connect more.
  • When lights are warm, periodically check the wires – they should not be warm to the touch.
  • Be sure to purchase and use nonflammable or flame resistant decorations.
  • Never put wrapping paper in a fireplace – it can ignite quickly and throw off sparks, and embers may cause a chimney fire.
  • Ensure that trees and other holiday decorations do not block exits.
  • Never leave lit candles burning when you leave the house or go to bed, and never go near a Christmas tree with an open flame.
  • Test your smoke alarms.
  • Keep children and pets away from lit candles, and store matches and lighters where children cannot reach them.
For additional information, visit www.yorkcounty.gov/fire or call 757-890-3600 between 8:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Museum releases commemorative Yorktown Christmas ornament

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

The York County Historical Museum is proud to announce the release of the third in a series of laser-etched, commemorative Yorktown Christmas ornaments. The third ornament is a beautiful rendering of the Nelson House.

The Nelson House is an impressive example of Georgian architecture that was built in the early 18th century by "Scotch Tom" Nelson. The house was later home to his grandson, Thomas Nelson, Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Although it was restored by the National Park Service in the 1970s, it still bears scars of the Siege of 1781. The house is open to visitors as staffing allows. For scheduling information call Colonial National Historical Park at 757-898-2410.

For more information or to purchase ornaments, call 757-898-3727. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments support the York County Historical Museum.

Local EDAs win "Virginia is for Lovers" marketing grant

November 30, 2010

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

In order to help fund an international business conference in the area, the three local Economic Development Authorities recently applied for and won a "Virginia is for Lovers" Marketing Leverage Grant from the Virginia Tourism Corporation.

The $12,000 grant will be used to help promote the 2011 Business Retention and Expansion International (BREI) Conference, co-hosted by the Economic Development Authorities of York County, Williamsburg and James City County, scheduled to be held at the Colonial Williamsburg Lodge on May 9-12.

"This was great news for us," said Melissa Dickens, Senior Business Development Representative for York County and chair of the conference planning committee. "This is a very competitive grant, so it was quite an honor to win."

The Virginia Tourism Corporation marketing leverage program helps stimulate new tourism spending through regional and local partnership marketing initiatives.

"Tourism is an instant revenue generator, bringing in powerful tax dollars that support our communities," said Virginia Tourism Corporation President and CEO Alisa Bailey. "This is a small but impactful matching grant program that helps our local partners get the most out of their marketing, which is essential to bringing visitors to Virginia."

The BREI conference is expected to bring at least 250 attendees to the Williamsburg area for the four-day gathering. The 2010 conference was held in New Orleans. The greater Richmond Partnership and the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance have recently become partnering organizations for this event, making it a regional and state-wide collaborative project.

The BREI Conference is the premier event for economic developers and others involved in assisting existing businesses and industries to prosper and grow. The May 2011 conference will be BREI's 18th annual conference.

BREI is the leading professional association for business retention and expansion. BREI is a non-profit association of educators and economic development professionals who work to advance business retention and expansion as an economic development strategy through scientific research, instruction, publications, meetings and other activities designed to advance and disseminate knowledge in retaining and expanding existing businesses in a given region.
