Appropriations
At last night’s meeting, City Council appropriated more than $21.7 million for the following projects:
  • $175,000 for training and equipment purchases for the Police Department. These funds are from the Criminal Justice Training Academy fees which are collected by the Clerks of Courts. Read more...
  • $661,245 for parks projects. These funds, from the Parks and Recreation Category of this year’s Capital Improvements Plan (CIP allow the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism to undertake projects in several city parks. Read more...
  • $3,600,000 for Waterworks project in upper York County. This project involves the construction of approximately 18,900 linear feet of 24-inch diameter water main. Read more...
  • $17,325,688 for seven transportation projects throughout the City. These projects are through the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Revenue Sharing Program and require at least a 50/50 city/state match.   • Test your soil before applying fertilizer. A soil test provides a list of recommendations for soil treatments to help you make the right decisions for your lawn.      
  • Use compost and mulch in flower beds to retain moisture. Mulch also can reduce or eliminate weeds that compete with landscape plants for moisture, nutrients and sunlight.

Human Services Advisory Board holds Town Hall

I’m bored, what’s going on in Newport News?

 
The Newport News Department of Human Services Advisory Board is holding a Town Hall/Information session for youth and their families on Saturday, March 25th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Brittingham-Midtown Community Center. With the theme of I’m bored, what’s going on in Newport News?, the session will look at how youth remain engaged and  involved in activities when they are out of school. Young people and families have the opportunity to look at summer programs, volunteer projects, and year-round activities available for youth in Newport News. Read more...
