"Remember the Forgotten" site dedication held at New Quarter Park

October 7, 2010

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Historian Robert Watson (center, in African attire, in the attached picture) led a special program of dedication to "Remember the Forgotten," at New Quarter Park on Saturday, Oct. 2.

As a part of York County Parks and Recreation's "Walk and Talk" series, the program was held to honor the memory of the African and Virginian-born slaves who toiled on New Quarter farm between the mid- 1660s and the early 19th century.

The original 2,000-acre farm, 545-acres of which now comprise the county's park, was improved by Robert "King" Carter in the early 1700s for the benefit of his grandson, Carter Burwell, who built Carter's Grove.

A sign, "Burwell's New Quarter," has been installed on the site where archaeologists discovered a refuse pit or cellar that held many artifacts dating from the 1720s to 1760s. On Oct. 2, Dr. Robert A. Whitehead Sr., pastor of New Zion Baptist Church, offered a prayer in memory of the forgotten people who lived and died at New Quarter during the approximately 150 years that the property served as an outlying farm. African drumming by Dakari Watson and Robert Whitehead Jr. opened and closed the program.
