Senior Center to host Open House on Friday, Nov. 12

October 25, 2010

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

The Senior Center of York will celebrate its 19th anniversary on Friday, Nov. 12, with an Open House from 1 to 3 p.m.

Art and craft exhibits created by Senior Center patrons will be featured, and appetizers will be served. The public is cordially invited to come and take part in this celebration.

The Senior Center of York was established in 1991 to serve as a central point for senior citizens aged 55 and up to participate in activities in York County, and was created through the efforts of the York County Board of Supervisors and many citizen volunteers. Local businesses, civic clubs and private citizens donated many of the original furnishings and fixtures. Due to the continued growth, the center's current facility is the third site the center has occupied in the past 19 years.

The Senior Center of York is a "home away from home" for enthusiastic senior citizen participants from the county and other localities who together make some 20,000 patron visits a year at the center. At the center, seniors enjoy an array of educational, cultural, exercise, health, and art programs.

Among the activities held at the center are computer classes, cultural days, line dancing, Body Recall and Tai Chi exercise classes, health days, craft and art classes, card and bingo games, scrapbooking, Dining Club, and a monthly AARP Driver Safety Program that qualifies participants for a cost reduction in their automobile insurance.

The Senior Center is located at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway, in the Washington Square Shopping Center. Please call 898-3807 for more information on daily activities and to RSVP for the Open House.

Change your clock, change your battery

October 26, 2010

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

When transitioning from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time and adjusting clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. on Nov. 7, the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety would like to remind citizens to also change the batteries in their smoke detectors.

"The "Change Your Clock Change Your Battery" program urges everyone to adopt a habit of changing smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector batteries when changing clocks, which could make the difference in surviving a fire in your home," said Fire Chief Stephen Kopczynski.

The National Fire Protection Association reports that one home fire death occurs in America approximately every three hours. In fact, home fires kill 540 children 14-years-old and under each year. A working smoke detector doubles a family's chances of escaping a home fire, but only if that smoke detector works.

York County residents who are unable to change their own smoke detector battery or that do not have a working smoke detector are encouraged to contact a family member, neighbor or friend to assist; residents that are unable to have their batteries changed or are without a working smoke detector and cannot afford to obtain one should contact the Department of Fire and Life Safety by calling 890-3600.

In addition, the Department of Fire and Life Safety recommends that residents use the "extra" hour they save from the time change to test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors by pushing the test button, planning "two ways out" of their residence in case of an emergency and practicing escape routes with the entire family.

With the introduction of 10-year lithium batteries available for use in smoke detectors, replacement may not be needed on an annual basis. However, regular cleaning and testing remains an important safety measure.

For more information, contact the Department of Fire and Life Safety at 890-3600.

"Remember the Forgotten" site dedication held at New Quarter Park

October 7, 2010

FOR RELEASE AT WILL

Historian Robert Watson (center, in African attire, in the attached picture) led a special program of dedication to "Remember the Forgotten," at New Quarter Park on Saturday, Oct. 2.

As a part of York County Parks and Recreation's "Walk and Talk" series, the program was held to honor the memory of the African and Virginian-born slaves who toiled on New Quarter farm between the mid- 1660s and the early 19th century.

The original 2,000-acre farm, 545-acres of which now comprise the county's park, was improved by Robert "King" Carter in the early 1700s for the benefit of his grandson, Carter Burwell, who built Carter's Grove.

A sign, "Burwell's New Quarter," has been installed on the site where archaeologists discovered a refuse pit or cellar that held many artifacts dating from the 1720s to 1760s. On Oct. 2, Dr. Robert A. Whitehead Sr., pastor of New Zion Baptist Church, offered a prayer in memory of the forgotten people who lived and died at New Quarter during the approximately 150 years that the property served as an outlying farm. African drumming by Dakari Watson and Robert Whitehead Jr. opened and closed the program.
