Well, at one point or another, all of these folks have mistakenly been placed on the federal government's "no-fly list." That's right … they've been placed on the list the federal government maintains to keep suspected terrorists out of the skies and planted firmly on the ground. Needless to say, accuracy hasn't been the first priority for the federal government when putting together the "no-fly list." Yet, this week, House Democrats (including, ironically enough, Rep. John Lewis … who is reported by CNN to have been stopped at the airport 35-40 times within a year) staged a "sit-in" on the House floor to try to force a vote on a piece of legislation that would prevent folks on the "no-fly list" from purchasing firearms. The bill that House Democrats are so devoted to wouldn't require government officials to meet any of the due process requirements that the Constitution necessitates before law-abiding citizens can be deprived of their fundamental rights. That means that anyone—you, or me, or President Obama, or yes, even Rep. John Lewis—could be placed on the list and prevented from exercising his or her Second Amendment rights. But the no-fly, no buy legislation would have prevented the atrocities that occurred in Orlando, right? Wrong. As The Atlantic reported in an article about the legislation stalled in the House: "Mateen was under FBI investigation for connections to terrorism two separate times in 2013 and 2014, the agency's director, James Comey, confirmed on Monday. During that time, the government placed him in the Terrorist Screening Database, more commonly known as the terror watch list. (The no-fly list is a smaller subset of this list that forbids suspected individuals from boarding a commercial plane.) When those inquires ended, the government removed him from the list, the Los Angeles Times reported. Even if the legislation had been enacted, it would not have ensured that the FBI would have flagged Mateen when he went to buy an assault-style rifle and handgun in the days before Sunday's massacre." So what is this week's stunt on the House Floor really about? It's not about preventing gun violence. It's far from being about protecting the Constitution. It's about publicity, plain and simple. What we should be focusing on in the House is protecting American lives while defending the Constitution. Those shouldn't be mutually exclusive. The fact is that when evil men seek to commit acts of violence, they have no reverence for the law. Curbing the rights of decent, law-abiding citizens doesn't prevent that. If we defeat terrorism everywhere it lives, we will prevent further recruitment and radicalization efforts and put an end to these acts of violence. That has to be objective number one.

Last weekend, American-born radical Islamist and self-proclaimed ISIS loyalist Omar Mateen entered Pulse night club in Orlando, Florida and opened fire. It was three long, harrowing hours before law enforcement officials were finally able to storm the night club and end the gunman's reign of terror. By the time the ordeal had finally drawn to a close, 49 American men and women were dead and 53 more were badly injured. It was one of the deadliest terrorist attacks on American soil, second only to 9/11. The temptation to let this atrocity divide us once again—to point fingers and lay blame and resort to the same tired talking points that keep us in the past—has been strong. But we have to resist that urge. In times like these, we have to remember that it's unity, not division, that will help us overcome. What we've been through during this last week—our grief as a nation—should serve as a reminder that we are at a civilizational cross-roads. On the one hand, there is the American way of life. "E pluribus Unum," our national motto says. "Out of many, one." We celebrate our differences. We disagree and yet come together and support one another in spite of those disagreements. We believe in the elevation, not the suppression, of individual liberties. We believe in an open society. Terrorists do not. They don't believe in individual liberty or democracy. They believe, instead, in forced adherence to a badly twisted religious doctrine at the penalty of death. We can defeat that deranged way of thinking that radical Islamists like Omar Mateen insist upon, but in order to do it, we have to defeat terrorism wherever it exists. That won't be an easy task, but it's an absolutely critical one. And it's why I've authored and supported a number of measures in the House to make our fight against terrorism winnable. As our world has evolved, so too have the tactics that terrorists are willing to use in order to recruit and radicalize Americans and other Westerners. To hamper recruitment and radicalization, I introduced the International Conflicts of Concern Act (H.R. 1929). This legislation would prohibit unauthorized personnel from traveling or distributing material support to entities engaged in armed conflict within those countries designated as countries of conflict concern. The bill would automatically designate Syria as a country of conflict concern for a one-year period. Perpetrators would be subject to both civil and criminal penalties including up to a 20-year term in prison. This legislation would still allow for legitimate travel by licensed humanitarian aid workers and other groups with the necessary level of clearance. I also had the opportunity to support Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul's (R-TX) Countering Terrorist Radicalization Act (H.R. 547) to help improve anti-terrorism intelligence and surveillance efforts here at home. This legislation would authorize the Secretary of Homeland Security to provide training for personnel to counter violent extremism, identify and report suspicious activities, and increase awareness of terrorism threats. Further, it would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to take into account public testimonials from former violent extremists and/or their colleagues in formulating a plan to undermine recruitment efforts by terrorists and terrorist organizations. That's vital if we are to effectively and efficiently defeat terrorist recruitment. We have a long road ahead, but the time for us to start taking the threat that terrorism poses to Americans and to people all over the world seriously has passed. This is a problem we have to deal with now, and I am intent on doing everything in my power to make sure that we have a comprehensive strategy to address and eliminate threats to our peaceful and open society here in the United States.

MONDAY.JUNE 13.2016                                                                         Hampton Roads Cities Work Together to Adapt to Sea Level Rise Leaders throughout the region are looking for ways communities can better adapt to living near large bodies of water. Over the past few years sea level rise and recurrent flooding have been an issue in the Hampton Roads area and will be an increasing challenge for the region through in the. Fortunately, Newport News sits on higher ground than the other communities and less than two percent of the City’s total area is expected to be affected by sea level rise.  However, the City is still pursuing several initiatives to reduce the impacts in areas that may be affected. Ironically, one of the affects on Newport News could be accommodating additional residents moving from other cities to the higher ground in our city.  We are actively participating in the Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Adaptation Forum, which was initiated in 2012 as an effort to promote discussion of climate change on Hampton Roads by Old Dominion University—in partnership with Virginia Sea Grant and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission. Read more...                                                                       Free Program to Help Seniors Properly Fit their Cars Make a reservation now for a free assessment at the June 16th CarFit program for seniors. Teams of trained technicians and/or health professionals will spend about 20 minutes with each older driver making sure they “fit” properly in their vehicles.   Checks include proper seating and making sure the driver’s seat, seat belt, mirrors, steering wheel, head restraint, and gas and brake pedals are in the proper positions. The Newport News Sheriff’s Office is participating in this event along with  members of S.A.L.T. - Seniors and Law Enforcement Together. The event is 9 AM to noon in the parking lot of Northside Christian Church, 1300 George Washington Highway in Yorktown. Drivers should sign up now to make sure they’re CarFit! Read more... Tires! Tires! And More Tires! Many residents are unsure of what to do with spare tires when they are ready to get rid of them; however, it’s important to know in Newport News tires are not accepted for collection at the curb. Residents can have their old tires recycled at the Recovery Operations Center (formerly known as the Residential Waste Drop-Off and Compost Facility) located at 550 Atkinson Way. As long as the tires are removed from the rim, they are happy to accept up to four tires on any given visit, limited to twelve tires per year.
