Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at City Center


The City of Newport News is joining with Sinclair Communications to present Cinco in the City, on Friday, May 5, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at City Center at Oyster Point. This free event features music by Tumbao Salsero, food trucks, beverage sales, face painting, and activities for all ages.
 
Tumbao Salsero consists of 11 band members who use full Latin percussion instruments such as timbales, congas, and bongos; two trumpets, two trombones, piano, bass guitar, and vocalists. Read more...

Peninsula Seniors and Law Enforcement Sponsors CarFit Event


Peninsula Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) is sponsoring a CarFit Event on Thursday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Northside Christian Church located at 1300 George Washington Memorial Highway in Yorktown. CarFit is a free community based educational program designed to help mature drivers assess how well they and their cars "fit" together and what actions they might take to improve that fit. At a CarFit event, a team of trained professionals work with each participant to ensure they "fit" their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety.

In addition, if you carry a child safety seat, a specialist with the Virginia Health Department will be on hand to check for proper installation. Read more...

National Drug Take Back Day


Take a look in your medicine cabinet and you likely will find at least one container of unwanted or expired medication which you should dispose. Unused medications can be accidentally ingested, stolen, misused and abused.
 
You can take advantage of getting rid of unwanted medication safely: the National Drug Take Back Day is on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The Newport News Police Department along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will be collecting potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction. Read more...
