1. VCDL/LEO Benefit match - and the winners are...

The VCDL/LEO Benefit Match was held on Saturday, September 26, at the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club near Charlottesville.  Donations to sponsor the teams went to the American Cancer Society.

We got lucky, as the weather was perfect!

There were 28 competitors in 4 teams.  The teams consisted of VCDL members and members of the following sheriffs departments: Culpeper County, Powhatan County, and York County.  Originally the Grayson County Sheriff's Department was also supposed to compete, but they had to cancel due to a temporary manpower shortage.  Also, VCDL decided to have one team, instead of two.

Team scores were decided by taking the top five highest-scoring members in each team and adding up their individual scores.

Powhatan County Sheriff, Brad Nunnally, and York County Sheriff, Danny Diggs, shot in the match with their teams.  Culpeper County Sheriff, Scott Jenkins, couldn't make it.

There were five IDPA-style stages.

RESULTS

The winner in the law enforcement category was Powhatan County!  York County took 2nd place and Culpeper County took 3rd place.

The overall winner of the match was VCDL!

The "top shot" of the match was VCDL member Roland Corbett, followed closely by two Powhatan County team members: Joe Fallis, who does firearms training for the department, and deputy Henry York.

The team that raised the most money, by far, was York County!  Each team had a goal of $500, with the overall goal of a $2,000 donation to the American Cancer Society.  That goal was handily surpassed with a total donation of $3,270!
  • York County Sheriff's Office: $2,275
  • VCDL: $512
  • Culpeper County Sheriff's Office: $283
  • Powhatan County Sheriff's Office: $75
  • Grayson County Sheriff's Office: $25
This was meant to be a fun match and, indeed, a great time was had by all!

Many, many thanks to the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club (RRPC) for hosting the event on short notice at their top-notch facility.  The match ran as smoothly as digested food passing through a goose.

Here are the RRPC members that made the event a success, many of whom skipped shooting in another match just to help at the VCDL/LEO match:  Bob Schmidt (president), Meg Rogers, Laura Painter, Bill Dessent, Chris Peterson, Richard McHaffa, Joey Miklos, and Travis Coffey.  I apologize if I missed anyone.

Also, I want to thank VCDL EM John Wilburn for the idea of the match and taking the lead in coordinating it.  I won't thank him for outshooting me by seven seconds.  :-(

There will be a VCDL webpage for the match set up soon, with photos and videos from the match.  A VA-ALERT item will go out when the page is ready for viewing.

We will do another match next year with one VCDL team and five LEO teams.  For a LEO team to be qualified to participate, they must serve in a jurisdiction that either has passed a "No local gun-control" resolution or has no local gun-control and is either a Second Amendment Sanctuary or a Constitutional Sanctuary.  If we keep a lid on local gun-control, that will be about 94% of the Commonwealth.
