Local movie premiere of "Hoovey"

Hello Everyone

Sharing with you exciting news that the latest film from Echolight Studios, Hoovey will premiere nationwide on Saturday, January 31 in over 600 official Echolight Cinema locations.  Here on the Peninsula you can see Hoovey exclusively at our nearest Echolight Cinema at Summit Christian Academy in Yorktown.

Tickets are $10 each and must be purchased online at the event link below. Please view the trailer there and get all the event information, including options to share the film information with others via twitter, facebook, and email.

Hoovey is the true life story of rising basketball star Eric Hoovey Elliott and his inspiring fight to come back after a devastating brain tumor robs him of his most basic functions and abilities. It's a terrific, faith-based film for the entire family and you can't see it at the local AMC or Regal Theaters.
Hoovey will be showing twice at the Summit Christian Academy Echolight Cinema on Saturday Jan. 31 and again on Friday Feb. 6 -- both days at 6:30 pm.  Doors open at 6:00 pm.
Fresh, hot pizza has been added to the menu at the concessions along with the standard theater fare of popcorn, candy, soda, and bottled water.  All very affordable, so enjoy a meal and snacks during the film.

Here is a link for the red carpet premiere of Hoovey which took place on Saturday in California.
There are several well known actors and actresses in this film and it is top notch cinematic quality and content without the objectionable scenes you find in even family focused films put out by Hollywood.

Please share this information with your friends, families, church, youth sports coaches, etc.
It's a terrific night out for groups too.  The film has a free downloadable Bible Study and discussion guide for youth leaders to share with older children and teens.

Please don't miss your chance to see Hoovey!

Thanks!

God bless~
Shirley

The COS Project Needs You

Dear COS Project Supporters,

I use that address guardedly because I know some people who strongly oppose the COS Project have signed our petition saying they support it, apparently only to be kept informed of how the Project is doing.  We're doing quite well, thank you.

In any case, allow me to introduce myself:  I'm Gary Porter, a volunteer worker with the Project here in York County.  On Wednesday of this week I went to Richmond to help Rita Dunaway and others contact Delegates and Senators to try to gain their support for HJR 497, the COS Project-compliant resolution currently being considered by the Virginia Assembly.  We really need it to pass this year.

A little more than a year ago, I was also in Richmond, joining a small group arguing against the idea of a Convention of the States.  As someone who teaches the Constitution, I thought I had studied the issue reasonably well, but a week after Lobby Day I returned to Richmond to hear Mike Farris discuss the COS Project plan.  Mike's presentation, particularly his statement that Congress does obey the Constitution (at least the one created for them by 200+ years of Supreme Court rulings) caused me to return home and do more research.  Eventually I concluded I had been wrong.

As many do, I had lumped all COS ideas together and concluded there was no way to conduct such an event safely.  But once I studied the COS Project plan in detail, I concluded this was not only something I could support, it was something I had to support.  My weekly column in the Yorktown Crier newspaper (Constitutional Corner) made a screeching 180-degree turn and I began doing all I could to explain that the fears of a "runaway convention" were not only unfounded, but that a COS was the only way we will ever effect certain changes in our out-of-control federal government.  Congress is never going to repeal the 17th Amendment or reduce their power by returning the Commerce Clause to the Founder's understanding.  Nullification, as effective as it can be in some circumstances, has its limits.

Next Tuesday, January 27th, a group of COS Project supporters are gathering in Richmond at 10:00am to hear Delegate Scott Lingamfelter (who sponsored HJR 497) and Mike Farris give us an update on where things stand in the Assembly.  While it would be great to have all 3000+ people who have signed the COS Project petition show up, I know many, perhaps most of you have to work that day.  I understand.

But many of the Delegates and Senators who are still undecided on this bill are wondering whether there is real support for this among their constituents.  We need to show them there is.  If you can't join us Tuesday (10:00 am at the Bell Tower), how about urging your friends or other family members to sign the COS Project Petition before then?

I find parking in Richmond rather daunting, but this week I parked in the Sun Trust building lot and the brief walk to the Assembly building was a breeze, even for these old knees  (the Sun Trust building address is 919 E. Main, but you enter their lot off Cary St.).  Please come join us and show the Assembly that now is the time to move this initiative forward.  If you definitely can join us Tuesday, please let me know.

Know Your Constitution

Dear Friends,

Dear Friends,

Alarmed at the continuing loss of fundamental freedom in American, I retired at the end of 2012 and took up the "hobby" of teaching the U.S. Constitution.  If there ever was a time when the American people needed to know their "Supreme Law of the Land" and rise up to fight for their unalienable rights, that time is now.

I've formed an organization called the Constitution Leadership Initiative, I write a weekly column for the Yorktown Crier newspaper and a couple of websites, I do a Friday morning radio show on the Constitution, and I try to keep people informed as to what is happening each week concerning attacks on their fundamental rights.  I'm looking for other citizens as concerned as I am over current events who want to both stay informed and learn more about their Constitution at the same time.

Did you know that a drug dog alerting to the presence of drugs outside your car on a public road permits a police officer to conduct a warrantless search of your car, while that same drug dog alerting on your front doorstep requires the officer first obtain a search warrant before entering the home?

If you want to stay informed and you want to receive a copy of my weekly essay (see sample attached) and other important documents from time to time, please reply to this email.

Beginning with a rush of visitors on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, week two of this year's session was punctuated by numerous committee meetings and ever-lengthening floor sessions. Many bills moved through subcommittee and full committee before reaching the House floor for a full vote. Highlighted below are updates on several key issues and information about my legislation.

Making college more affordable
Tuesday's State of the Union address included President Obama's plan to target 529 college savings accounts for taxation. While the President pursues policies to make it more difficult for families to save for college, Virginia Republicans are working to lessen the burden of college expenses. Many of you have contacted me to express concern about the rising cost of higher education, and I am pleased to share information about Republican initiatives to reduce these expenses.

Earlier today, the House of Delegates passed legislation capping expensive college athletic fees and making it easier for small schools to cut wasteful spending. House Bills 1895 and 1897 will now be heard in the Senate.

During the upcoming weeks, the House Higher Education Subcommittee will also hear Delegate Nick Rush's legislation providing for "flat-fee" college degrees. Details about House Bill 1692 are available on the Legislative Information System.

Veterans
Did you know that Virginia is home to over 780,000 veterans? In James City and York Counties, there are 18,971 veterans. Virginia has a critical need for additional veterans care centers. As my colleague Del. Chris Stolle noted, "Maine has a bed in a veterans care center for every 200 veterans in the state. Virginia has a bed for every 2,000 veterans."

I believe that we have a responsibility to care for the veterans who have served and sacrificed on behalf of our country. For this reason, I am pleased to report that legislation funding new care centers in Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads advanced from committee. The large veteran population in our region will benefit from these additional services. Likewise, existing centers in Richmond and Salem will be better able to meet the needs of veterans in those regions.
Make your voice heard!
There is still time to complete my 10-question online survey!  Delegate Pogge's 2015 Session Survey.

Defending the Virginia Constitution
Recently, my legislation requiring Virginia's Attorney General to defend the state's Constitution has garnered media interest. The 2014 General Assembly session was marked by conflict stemming from Attorney General Herring's failure to defend the Constitution. Regardless of one's perspective of Virginia's marriage amendment, the Attorney General took an oath to defend the Commonwealth's Constitution. Attorney General Herring's failure to do so set a dangerous precedent, paving the way for future Attorneys General to selectively decide which portions of Virginia law merit defense.

House Bill 1573 codifies that the Attorney General or his designee must defend the Commonwealth. Links to media coverage are provided below:
