Kayakers enjoy New Quarter Park event – next one set for Oct. 16

More than 35 people brought their own kayak or rented one for New Quarter Park's Sept. 18 Bring Your Own Kayak paddle.
 
The fall leaves along Queen's Creek were beginning to turn and paddlers saw Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, Clapper Rails, and other birds along the way. Chesapeake Bay Foundation Clean Water Kits were given away and paddlers who weren't already CBF members were given a free one-year membership. 
 
New Quarter Park's last BYOK this year will be held on Oct. 16. Participants should arrive at 9 a.m., drive 3/4 mile to the put-in site with park staff, and expect to launch by 9:20. The out-and-back paddle will last about two and a half hours with take-out at the same site by noon. The program is free and open to the public. Kayaks are available to rent for BYOK from Chesapeake Experience for $25 by calling 890-0502 or e-mailing Jill@chesapeakeexperience.org.
 
New Quarter Park is located at 1000 Lakeshead Drive between the Queens Lake neighborhood and Cheatham Annex. From the Colonial Parkway, exit at Queen's Lake and turn right at the end of the exit ramp. Travel a short distance to Lakeshead Drive. Follow this road into the park. If traveling to Williamsburg on Interstate 64, take exit 242, Route 199 toward Jamestown, then take the first exit on Route 143 west. Turn right on Penniman Road, travel one block, and then turn left on Hubbard Lane. Travel toward Queens Lake and turn right on Lakeshead Drive. Follow this road to the New Quarter Park office.

Yorktown Market Days to feature more local artists this fall

Yorktown Market Daysbegan this year's season in May with more than 30 vendors offering fresh produce, meat and seafood, gourmet herbs and spices, organic items, plants, baked goods, cut flowers, pasta, sauces, herbal soaps and lotions and more. 
 
Located on the banks of the York River between Buckner and Ballard Streets, the markets continue this fall and holiday months on Saturdays, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11 from 8 a.m. to noon. 
 
More than 25 local artists are participating in the 2010 season, offering one-of-a-kind quality art for sale.

Entertainment is also offered each week including bluegrass, folksongs, sea shanties, country, western, swing, and Americana tunes. Visitors can also sample specialty shops at Riverwalk Landing offering patriotic items, home décor, clothing, jewelry, art, rugs and more, all while enjoying the river view.
 
Free parkingis available in several public parking areas throughout historic Yorktown. No rain dates are scheduled for the Market Days. Senior Center to host White Elephant Sale on Oct. 2

The public is cordially invited to donate to and/or participate in the Senior Center of York's 2010White Elephant, Bake Sale and Craft Fair to be held on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. 
 
This event will be held at the Senior Center, which is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway in Grafton. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Senior Center. 
 
Donations, such as household items, crafts, and articles other than clothing may be delivered to the center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bake sale items may be delivered Friday, Oct. 1 from 12-4 p.m., or on the day of the sale at 8:30 a.m. 
 
The Craft Fair will feature a wide array of crafts, including knitting, crocheting, paintings and more. Those in attendance can also purchase tickets for a chance to win some great door prizes. Those donating items for the sale are asked to tag their items with suggested prices. Limited pickup may be available for anyone wishing to donate larger items.
