Fwd: Youth Commission application deadline extended to April 1

March 11, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The application period for the 2011-2012 York County Youth Commission has been extended until April 1.

Applicants must be York County residents who are preparing to enter grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 in September 2011.

The Youth Commission is a 15-member student led group selected annually by the York County Board of Supervisors. The commission's primary purpose is to serve as a link between the Board and the county's youth by representing youth related concerns, issues and ideas. In addition, commission members typically participate in rewarding community service projects, learn about county government, sponsor countywide high school social events, and build leadership skills through various team-building activities.

A completed application form and a letter of recommendation must be received at the York County Parks and Recreation office by 5 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2011. After reviewing the applications, the Board of Supervisors will appoint up to three teens from each of the county's five election districts. All applicants will be notified this May, and those applicants appointed to serve on the commission for next school year will be formally introduced at a televised Board of Supervisors' meeting scheduled for June 7.

Application forms and program details may be downloaded from the York County Youth Commission's Web site at www.ycyc.info. Forms are also available in the York County Parks and Recreation Office, York County Public Library locations in Yorktown and Tabb, and at the Williamsburg/James City County libraries.

For more information about the Youth Commission please call the Parks and Recreation office at 890-3500.
