Women of Virginia, Commemorative Commission to Honor the Contributions of the
Update on Women's Monument
Dear Members of the Commission,
Good news abounds! We received a matching grant of $400,000 from the Cabell Foundation! It is a 1:2 grant so that means we have to raise $800,000 to receive the money.
More good news: the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation has voted to give us $300,000 before the end of this month and that money will qualify for the matching grant. (Half of the $800,000 can come from foundations; the other half must be from individuals.) In addition, we have an individual pledge of $100,000 and some possible pledges in the works.
Several events are scheduled this summer, including an event in Williamsburg on June 27th, a July event in Arlington, and an exciting event hosted by author Barbara Kingsolver in August. We hope to schedule two events in the Richmond area in the near future.
We hope to approve the first contract for the construction of the plaza soon and have the groundbreaking before the end of the year.
So now is the time to redouble our efforts to raise the money for the matching grant and then for the completion of the Monument. All of you have devoted time to this effort over the years so please join in the final push to make it a reality!
If you are able to attend the meeting on Wednesday at 10 am in the Capitol, please do.
Sincerely, Mary Margaret
