Families in Newport News are invited to attend IMPACT 2017, the annual back to school event, August 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Stop by South Morrison Family Education Center, 746 Adams Dr., for backpack and school supply giveaways and a community party for children and parents alike.

Families Invited to Enjoy Free Tennis and More

Huntington Park Tennis Center hosts “Not Just Tennis Family Days”

Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Tennis Program offers “Not Just Tennis Family Days” one Saturday a month, April through October, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Families are invited to Huntington Park Tennis Center and can utilize a tennis court at no cost for activities such as tennis, corn hole, lollipop tennis as well as twisted tennis ball machines. The event allows for any other sports activities suitable for playing on a hard court tennis surface. The usage of the tennis courts are at the leisure of the participant. Tennis Center staff can provide loaner tennis racquets, corn holes, used tennis balls, twist tennis ball machine and other equipment if requested. Read more...

Rare Plant Species Observed at Grafton Ponds Natural Area Preserve

Recently two rare plants were rediscovered on Waterworks property near the Grafton Ponds Natural Area Preserve in York County. Employees from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation found approximately 300 Slender Marsh Pink (Sabatia campanulata) plants. This gorgeous plant is usually found in low, wet areas and it was first documented on the property in 1986. Additionally, several dozen Hairy St. John’s wort (Hypericum setosum) plants were observed that had not been seen on the property in over 20 years.

The 375-acre Grafton Ponds Natural Area Preserve is managed in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Read more...
