View in browser  |  Get our newsletters Good Morning, Pennsylvania THURSDAY, SEPT. 14, 2023 • TODAY'S WEATHER Demolition on hold Empty for years and drawing vandals and arsonists, the William Penn building in the Harrisburg School District was thiiiissss close to being demolished.   Fixing it up is too costly, the school board said in July upon deciding to have it torn down for around $8 million. Renovations would've cost $40 million to $90 million, district leaders said.   However, those who love the old school spoke up at a meeting Tuesday night, and the demolition is on hold.  Dozens of William Penn alumni, Harrisburg residents and history enthusiasts showed up to make their case to save the the former school, built nearly 100 years ago.   As our Zahriah Balentine reports, a task force will be created to help determine the fate of the former high school, the Harrisburg School District receiver announced at the end of the emotional public meeting.   The final decision is going to take creative thinking and financing, the receiver noted. It is formulated to protect against variants. Also, immunity to COVID-19, whether from vaccination or natural exposure, fades after a few months. However, rumors that mask mandates are returning are untrue.   Overdoses kill again: A cluster of overdoses in Harrisburg have led to the death of a ninth person, officials said. All the victims are over the age of 50;  older people are the troubling new face of drug overdoses. The victims are believed to have taken drugs containing fentanyl, police said.   Fatal apartment fire: A fire at an apartment complex in Lancaster County killed a woman and injured a police officer yesterday morning.   4 dead in 2 days: A man shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself Tuesday evening in York County, authorities said. On Wednesday, also in York County, a man and woman were found dead after a police standoff. Authorities believe they also died in a murder-suicide. Read more Business Restaurant closing: Your Place is closing another restaurant, this one on Kohn Road in Susquehanna Township. It recently closed in Hershey, too, leaving just one site, in Lancaster County.   Store closing: Another Rite Aid store in Cumberland County is closing.
