View in browser  |  Get our newsletters Good Morning, Pennsylvania TUESDAY, SEPT. 5, 2023 • TODAY'S WEATHER Record-setting heat  Temperatures this week in Pennsylvania (and other states) are supposed to be well into the 90s, or higher, setting heat records for ths time of year.   And instead of having a snow day this early in the school year, some children will be having a heat day off from their too-warm classrooms. Remote learning or modified schedules are set in some districts, including West Shore, Harrisburg, Central Dauphin and on both sides of state, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.   Here are ways to stay safe in hot weather and to keep your pets safe – the tips aren't too different, actually. Be inside during the hottest times of the day, stay hydrated and listen to your body.   Now, let's take a look at this morning's headlines. (Mark Pynes, PennLive.com) Today's talkers Boosting nurse ranks: Starting today, Pennsylvania is part of a multi-state licensing compact expected to bring more nurses here. Under the compact, Pennsylvania and 40 other states and territories agree to accept licenses of nurses from other compact members — similar to how states recognize out-of-state driver's licenses.   Meteor sighting: A fireball meteor shot over the mid-Atlantic region Sunday night. NASA said it grew as bright as a quarter moon before disintegrating around 22 miles above York County after traveling more than 55 miles through the atmosphere.   Work after prison: For the thousands of incarcerated men and women in Pennsylvania returning to society every year, finding work — and finding purpose — is critical to success. These people have done it. Read more Emergency reports Cliff fall: It took about three hours to rescue a 23-year-old woman who fell 50 feet from a cliff at World's End State Park in Sullivan County Sunday morning. She fell while trying to take a picture, authorities say.   Lake death: The coroner was called to a lake rescue at Codorus State Park yesterday. The person found had shot himself to death in a boat, the coroner said.   Killer on the loose: A man convicted of stabbing his girlfriend to death escaped from Chester County Prison last week. He's been on the run for more than 5 days, prompting West Chester University to cancel classes and other places to close. Police have stepped up the search. Read more Business Used cars: If you're in the market for a used car, the good news is prices are lower than about a year ago. The bad news is a supply of good, cheap cars is hard to come by. The pool of cars being sold for less than $20,000 is shrinking, from 49% in 2019 to just 12% of the market now. See also: Proposed bills would abolish annual vehicle inspections   Cash requirement: A state lawmaker wants pause businesses moving away from accepting cash for purchases. He is proposing legislation that would require businesses to accept cash for purchases of less than $500.    Property sold: The former home of the Central Penn Business Journal on Paxton Street in Harrisburg has been sold to a city-based partnership group. Read more Advertisement Entertainment Singers' deaths: The former lead singer of Smash Mouth, Steve Harwell, died yesterday of liver failure at age 56. On Friday, "Margaritaville" singer Jimmy Buffett, 76, died of  a rare skin cancer he'd had for four years.    Sweet emotion: Aerosmith began its farewell "Peace Out" tour Saturday in Philadelphia with a two-hour set spanning its voluminous catalog.
