Lebanon's full of bologna |
In case you missed this dramatic story the other day: The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked the city of Lebanon to alter its New Year's Eve plans and not drop a bologna. PETA has offered vegan bologna to be used instead. The group noted that using vegan alternatives to processed meats helps the environment, is better for humans' health and reduces animal suffering. The central Pa. city didn't offer us any comment about PETA's request, but we're going to go out on a limb and say it's sticking with the meat. It has on its website that the dropping bologna is donated by Seltzer's, which will be handing out samples at the festivities. An old PennLive story about the odd things that are dropped in central Pa. for New Year's (examples: pickle, wrench, strawberry, sled) says that the Lebanon bologna drop started in 1996. This Sunday, the bologna will be attached to a disco ball hours before midnight, according to Lebanon's info sheet. After the drop, the food will be donated to the Lebanon Rescue Mission. |

What's dropping (and rising): Noontime and evening events for children and early bedtimers are scheduled for Sunday, followed by several things rising or falling (a strawberry, a Kiss, a pickle ...) at midnight. Practicing in Hershey: Hersheypark workers tested a 300-pound aluminum and fiberglass Hershey's Kiss yesterday on the square in Hershey. The Kiss will be raised at midnight on New Year's Eve at ChocolateTown Square. What's open, closed: On New Year's Eve, Sunday, most grocery stores will close early. Many will be open on New Year's Day, but banks, government offices, schools and the post office will be closed. Pork & sauerkraut meals: Eating pork and sauerkraut, a New Year's Day tradition in central Pa., promises to bring good luck. You don't have to make it yourself; these places are serving it on Monday. |

Police shooting: A sex offender wanted by police on rape charges died yesterday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting near a cluster of businesses in Mount Joy Township, according to the Lancaster County district attorney's office. 3 dead in stabbings: Police are investigating several stabbings yesterday in Hanover, York County, that left three people dead, including a 17-year-old, and a fourth injured. Shooting arrest: A man charged in August with four counts of attempted homicide for allegedly shooting people from a car window has been taken into custody, Harrisburg police said yesterday. 11-year-old crash victim: Funeral services will be held today for an 11-year-old girl who died in a head-on crash Christmas Eve in Lancaster County. Her brothers were critically injured. Party charges: A Bucks County conservative activist who ran for lieutenant governor is facing assault charges in connection with an underage drinking party at her home. Clarice Shillinger, 36, founder of the political action committee Keeping Kids in School, is accused of punching a 16-year-old. Guns in airports: Airline travelers' "I forgot" excuse when they are caught attempting to bring a firearm, loaded or unloaded, through an airport baggage checkpoint isn't cutting it for a state lawmaker. He wants any such gun owner to lose his license to carry. |
