A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in September.
Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. The center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rt. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The center is closed all county holidays.

Scrapbooking & Greeting Cards, Monday, Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make beautiful cards and assists you with your scrapbook. These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for your loved ones. Note: Please limit to four cards. Culture Day, "Old Time Radio & Early Days On TV," Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 1 p.m. Come relive special moments and memories of yesteryear with facilitator Bill Walker. Mr. Walker will present a fun, informative, and interactive video show of early days of radio and television with television personalities such as Jack Benny, Milton Berle, and Bob Hope. "How's Your Hearing Aid Working?" Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Is your hearing aid working its best for your particular hearing loss? Find out with David A. Taylor, MA, CCC-A, an audiologist from Ears to You. He will bring his Real Ear equipment to the center so you can see exactly how your hearing aid works. "Consumer Reports" called this test a "must have" in a 2009 article on hearing aids. Provider-neutral advice will be given regarding corrective actions. Appointments are limited so please sign up by calling the Senior Center at 898-3807. Please bring a copy of your latest hearing test (audiogram) as participation is not possible without it.
Tai Chi Classes Beginning Sept. 15. We are currently accepting registrations for Tai Chi. Come enjoy the health benefits of this ancient Chinese art form such as balance, breathing, concentration and mediation techniques with Instructor Bill Hansell. The next 10-week session will be held Thursday, Sept. 15 through Thursday, Nov. 17. Classes meet on Thursdays from 10 to 11 a.m. The cost is $45. International Food Day, Friday, Sept. 16 at 11:30 a.m. Let's celebrate our diverse cultures through a variety of cuisines. We will provide a smorgasbord of foods for you to sample such as Chinese, Italian, Mexican, German, Indian and more. Come adorned in a native costume and be entered into a contest to win a prize. We will dine at noon. The fee for this event will be $3. Please register by calling 898-3807 for this program by no later than Sept. 14.
Creating a Cuddly Collectible, Monday, Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to noon. Detra Dearing of Noah's Animal Workshop will provide instructions on creating an adorable stuffed animal. Participants can make a bear, dog, cat, frog, or even an alligator, and more. The fee will range from $15 to $30 depending on the size and materials you choose. Payments can be made at the time of the program. There will be an example and price lists posted at the front desk. Please register for this activity by calling 898-3807 by Monday, Sept. 12, so supplies can be ordered. There is a maximum of 15 participants.
AARP Driver Safety Program, Sept. 19 & Sept. 20. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, Sept. 19 from 12:45 – 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 20 from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is now $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members.Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
September Birthday Bash, Friday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. Come out for an enjoyable time with the Seaford Seniors. This lively and wonderful musical group will play a medley of songs consisting of country, gospel, and your old time favorites. September birthdays will be recognized at this bash, but you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to attend. Cake and beverage will be provided. Please call 898-3807 to register for this program.
Computer General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk.
Craft Activities. Why not take advantage of some of the ongoing craft activities taking place at the center every month?Please call the center at 898-3807 for more details and space availability. The following is our current schedule of activities:
- Knitting and Crochet Class: Mondays, 1 to 3 p.m.
- Art Classes: Instructors Myrna Graham and Hazel Camp offer free art classes during the week. Their Intermediate/Advanced Class meets on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Quilters: Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Senior Center of York to be closed on Monday, Sept. 5, for Labor Day.
Senior Center of York 2011 Annual Fundraiser, Saturday, Oct. 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Start marking your calendar for this annual special event to include a white elephant sale, craft fair, and prize drawings. Beginning Sept. 19, please bring your donated goods (except for clothing) to the center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please tag items with your suggested prices. Limited pickup may be available for anyone wishing to donate larger items. For more information, call 898-3807.
