Trapped person successfully extricated from structural collapse

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
 
        York County Fire and Life Safety personnel who responded to Advance Auto Parts on Merrimac Trail this afternoon to work a structural collapse of that building successfully rescued the one subject who was trapped in that collapse.
        Emergency personnel were first called to the scene around 3 p.m. on reports of the collapse of a commercial structure. On scene, they found the back and front of the structure had separated from the main building and the roof had collapsed into the store. One individual was trapped inside.
        Shortly after arriving on scene, the trapped individual was able to crawl out of the structure. He is currently being evaluated by emergency personnel for possible injuries.
        The cause of the roof collapse is currently under investigation.

Hurricane Irene causing some damage in York County

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
 
            As of 3 p.m. today, York County has experienced some damage as Hurricane Irene passes through the area. Currently, Fire and Life Safety personnel are working a search and rescue mission at Advance Auto Parts on Merrimac Trail in the upper part of the county. That building has collapsed and sustained major structural damage and there are reports that there is a person in the building. Staff is working to stabilize the structure for recovery.
            Additionally, VDOT closed Route 17 Northbound from Fort Eustis Boulevard to the Coleman Bridge at 1:50 p.m. today due to a downed tree. Some roof damage due to falling tree limbs has been reported at houses on Hillburne Lane, Sheriff's Place, Parchment Boulevard and Charles River Landing.  There have been sporadic power outages and some down trees reported throughout the county. At present, there are about 15,000 customers without power. 
            Currently there are 63 people in the Tabb High School shelter, and 33 at the Grafton School Complex.
