Chicken-keeping zoning planning committee to meet Oct. 26

October 21, 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The York County Planning Commission's ad hoc committee to review the proposed Zoning Ordinance text amendments pertaining to the keeping of chickens as an accessory, non-commercial use on residential properties will hold a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Environmental and Development Services Building, 105 Service Drive, in Yorktown.

The Zoning Ordinance amendments sponsored by the Board of Supervisors would allow the keeping of backyard chickens in various residential zoning districts, either as a matter of right or with a Special Use Permit, subject to specific performance standards. These amendments have been proposed in response to requests made by various York County residents who either already have chickens on their residential properties and wish to ensure that the practice is allowed to continue or would like to have the opportunity to keep chickens on their residential property, subject to appropriate restrictions.

The proposed Zoning Ordinance text amendments can be downloaded from the York County Planning Commission website at www.yorkcounty.gov/planning. Copies are also available for review at the Planning Division office, which is located in the Administration Building, 224 Ballard Street, Yorktown. For additional information, please contact the Planning Division at (757) 890-3404 or by email at planning@yorkcounty.gov.
