Two county emergency responders win 2011 Governor's EMS Awards

York County Captain/Paramedic Marty Tomasek and Firefighter/Paramedic James Laing were both honored with 2011 Governor's EMS Awards at the annual EMS Symposium in Norfolk this month.
Tomasek, a 22-year veteran of the Department of Fire and Life Safety, was recognized for the development of the department's new Functional Circuit Training Fitness Program. This comprehensive and budget-friendly health and wellness program uses low-cost items such as tires, rope, webbing, rubber mats and sledgehammers integrated into a circuit to help firefighters simulate some of the physical strength, endurance and cardiovascular demands required of them during an emergency.
Tomasek's commitment to health and fitness has spurred a similar dedication in his coworkers, some of whom are now training for triathlons, participating in local health-related programs and helping their fellow EMS providers accomplish their health goals. Tomasek was honored with the Governor's EMS Award for Outstanding Contribution to EMS Health and Safety.
Laing, who has been an EMS provider for more than 30 years, received the Governor's EMS Award for Outstanding Pre-Hospital Provider. In his time as an EMS provider, Laing has developed and implemented hazardous materials medical protocols, standardized equipment and inventor for medic units, reviewed and revised EMS treatment protocols and trained new medics.
Laing was recognized by the Governor for his professionalism, clinical excellence, patient advocacy and for his commitment to advancing a system for ever-improving emergency medical care.

Board seeks applicants for the Stormwater Advisory Committee

The York County Board of Supervisors is currently seeking applications from county citizens interested in serving on the York County Stormwater Advisory Committee.
The Stormwater Advisory Committee develops and implements public education and outreach programs on stormwater issues; attempts to increase public involvement and participation in stormwater issues; provides increased citizen access to county staff for stormwater and drainage issues; and assists county staff and the Board of Supervisors in identifying drainage problems throughout the county and developing priorities for stormwater drainage projects.
The Stormwater Advisory Committee meets the third Thursday of every other month at 7 p.m. in York Hall in Yorktown.
York County citizens interested in applying for appointment to the York County Stormwater Advisory Committee may obtain an application at the County Administrator's Office at 224 Ballard Street in Yorktown, or by calling 890-3320. Applications may also be obtained and filed by visiting www.yorkcounty.gov, clicking on On-Line Services, and clicking on Board Bank Application.

Sign a holiday card for our heroes at the county's Dec. 2 Tree Lighting

On Dec. 2, at Yorktown's Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, the York County Historical Committee will team up with the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes Inc. to deliver holiday cheer and greetings to service members, their families and veterans throughout the holiday season.
From 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Freight Shed on Water Street in Yorktown the public is invited to send a "touch of home" through holiday greeting cards that contain messages of cheer and appreciation.
New, unused cards have been collected by the Historical Committee, which sponsors the Annual Tree Lighting event. Once signed, the Red Cross and Pitney Bowes will then screen cards for hazardous materials, sort and package the cards, and deliver them to military bases and hospitals, veteran's hospitals and other locations during the holidays. Pitney Bowes is donating all screening, packaging and shipping to the cause.
For the past four years the Coastal Virginia Region has participated in the Holiday Mail for Heroes Campaign. It only takes a few minutes of your time to sign a card to share your appreciation of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make each day in service to our country. The Holiday Mail for Heroes program continues in the Red Cross tradition of service to those who serve.
Last year, with the help of Pitney Bowes, hundreds of volunteers screened, sorted and packaged cards that were delivered to military bases, veteran and military hospitals across the U.S. and around the world.
