View in browser  |  Get our newsletters Good Morning, Pennsylvania TUESDAY, NOV. 14, 2023 • TODAY'S WEATHER  Granting wishes Central Pa. charities and nonprofit organizations that are in need of assistance can ask for help in our annual "Wish List."    Nonprofit organizations are invited to submit up to three items, such as canned goods, pet food, volunteers (include the task) or money (include the purpose).   In turn, we'll publish that list near the end of this month so people in giving moods can grant some of those wishes.    The deadline to sign up is tomorrow, Nov. 15.  Fill out the form on PennLive here.   Now, let's take a look at this morning's headlines. (Jimmie Brown, PennLive.com) Today's talkers Chance to change killed: When 19-year-old Kevin Cagle narrowly survived being stabbed, he knew it was time to make a change. He wanted to return to church, get a good job and leave behind the violence and instability of the streets. Months later, his body was found in garbage bags along I-80 in Montour County. He'd been shot. His arms and legs were duct-taped. No arrests have been made, leaving his family struggling and wondering.   Gas prices fall: Gas prices are continuing to fall as we head toward the Thanksgiving holiday. The average price for a gallon of gas in the Harrisburg area is $3.62, according to GasBuddy. That's 14 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and 47 cents/gallon lower than a year ago.   Applesauce recalls: U.S. health officials are warning doctors to be on the lookout for possible cases of lead poisoning in children after at least 22 toddlers in 14 states were sickened by lead linked to tainted pouches of cinnamon apple puree and applesauce. A Pa. company is among those that have recalled the food. Read more Emergency reports Child's CO death: A 5-year-old York County boy died after being stricken by carbon monoxide poisoning at his family's farm Friday night, the coroner's office said.   Murder-suicide: Two people died last week in a murder-suicide inside a Lancaster County home, the coroner's office said. A man killed a woman in her apartment and then himself, according to the coroner's office. Read more Holidays Thanksgiving dinners: Several restaurants and hotels will be open on Thanksgiving, Nov. 23, with brunches, buffets and dinners, but make reservations soon. You can get food to-go from grocery stores and other places. If you're cooking, you'll find turkey prices have dropped vs. last year.   Wine and lights: A Schuylkill County winery has seen a Thanksgiving weekend customer appreciation event turn into something much bigger: its annual Lighting of the Vineyard.   Busy time to travel: Millions of people going away for Thanksgiving next week will be traveling by car, AAA says. Wednesday, the day before the holiday, will be the busiest. Things will be busy at airlines, too, as security checkpoints are expected to be busier than ever.   Christmas tree auction: What is billed as the world's largest Christmas tree auction takes place Friday in Union County. The manager anticipates selling 50,000 to 60,000 trees to bulk buyers who will resell them.   Santa is coming to town: Santa Claus' schedule is packed this time of year, but he's still been able to schedule numerous appearances in central Pa. during the holiday season. Read more Advertisement Politics County commissioners change: Dauphin County commissioners have a Democratic majority for the first time in 100 years. After vote totals from provisional ballots were added to last week's unofficial vote count, Democrat newcomer Justin Douglas topped Republican incumbent Chad Saylor. Douglas will join incumbents George Hartwick (D) and Mike Pries (R).    Senate race stress for Dems: With the retirement of Democratic U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Democrats can't afford to lose any more incumbents if they want to keep their majority. That includes in Pennsylvania, where Bob Casey, a three-term incumbent Democrat, is rated as a slight favorite. Republican businessman David McCormick is the only GOP candidate running so far.
