Winter hours at park; Senior Center update; Veterans Day office closings; Employee receives award

Winter hours begin Friday, November 1, at York County's New Quarter Park. This 545-acre park, located at 1000 Lakeshead Road, will be closed weekdays, except Friday.  The park's winter hours will be 10 a.m. to dusk on Fridays and 8 a.m. to dusk on Saturdays and Sundays.  The three-day schedule will extend through April. Visitors who walk into the park to access the hiking and mountain bike trails during weekdays will have access to a portable restroom facility. The park will be open on occasional weekday holidays, weather permitting, including the upcoming November 11 Veterans Day holiday.

County employee named Zoning Official of the Year
by statewide organization

 Joycelyn Y. Corbin, Certified Zoning Officer with York County's Department of Environmental and Development Services' Division of Development and Compliance, was recently selected as "2013 Certified Zoning Official of the Year" by the Virginia Association of Zoning Offices (VAZO) at its statewide conference in Virginia Beach.  Ms. Corbin was nominated and recommended by her peers based on her achieving and maintaining a high degree of professionalism, dedication, and service to citizens, her employer and the VAZO organization.
 In order to qualify for the award, applicants must not only attain a high level of performance and achievement, but they must also pass a rigorous test to become a Certified Zoning Officer.  Ms. Corbin has been a Certified Zoning Officer for eight years.  She also serves as the Region 8 secretary to VAZO and was elected to that position in 2007.
 VAZO is a statewide organization primarily comprised of zoning and land use professionals employed by state and local governments across Virginia and was organized to promote the interest and welfare of zoning administration and enforcement agencies.
 Ms. Corbin has been employed with York County for 13 years and is married to Percy "Kip" Corbin.  They have two children, Kiara and Kalen.


Senior Center of York Announces November Events

A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in November. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. The Center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rte. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Center is closed all County Holidays.  Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Culture Day, "World Rhythm," Wednesday, November 13 at 1 p.m. Connie Ralston will provide a multicultural hands-on experience with drums. Ms. Ralston facilitates world rhythm exercises to teach unity through diversity by helping individuals explore their abilities to communicate and express joy together.  Please sign up at the front desk for this program.

           Senior Center's 22nd Anniversary Open House, Friday, November 15 from 1 to 3 pm
In honor of 22 years, come enjoy a fair of our activities and see what the Center has to offer.  There will be a brief program at 1 p.m. followed by demonstrations, displays, and exhibits.  Light refreshments.  Please RSVP by November 13.  Call 898-3807 for more information.
           Scrapbooking & Greeting Cards, Monday, November 18 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make beautiful cards and assists you with your scrapbook.  These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for loved ones.  Note: Please limit to four cards.  Please register at the Center's front desk for this program.

           AARP Driver Safety Program, Monday, November 18 and Tuesday, November 19.  This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, November 18 from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, November 19 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members. Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
 
                       November Pre-Holiday Birthday Bash, Karaoke Friday, November 22 at 1 p.m.  Come sing along with Karaoke Jockeys Sam and Dave who are back with their fantastic selection of songs! You are sure to find something to suit your musical tastes.  Individual and group performances are encouraged so come and sing along or just come and enjoy the fun!  Remember you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to come celebrate with us.  Cake and beverage served.  Please register for this program by calling 898-3807.

            2013 Senior Center Art Exhibit at the Gallery at York Hall, November 25 through December 16. Senior Center crafters are invited to display their creations during this exhibit.  If you are interested in showcasing your work, call the Center at 898-3807 or stop by the front desk for more details.  Space is limited.  The Gallery at York Hall is located on Main Street in Yorktown.
          
Computers and General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities.  Please note classes are held in the lab on Tuesdays. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk. 

Mark Your Calendar:

Breakfast, Tree-Trimming, and Singing, Tuesday, December 3.  In preparing for the season, come have a Hardee's biscuit at 9:30 a.m. with us, and help us decorate the Center's tree. Then enjoy a lively and festive concert by Seaford Elementary School Choir at 10:30 a.m.  Please register by December 2.

Senior Center Holiday Luncheon Friday, December 6 at 11 a.m.  Join us for a merry time with good friends, food, and music.  Registration will begin on November 18 and will conclude on December 3 or until space is full.  The fee will be $3 and should be paid at the time of registration. 

          Volunteers Needed.  Do you have a flair for design? Can you turn regular everyday household items into a work of art?  We are looking for individuals to assist and instruct make-it/take-it projects.  Please call 898-3807 if you can help.
     
Note: The Center will be closed on Monday, November 11 in observance of Veteran's Day as well as on November 28 and November 29 for the Thanksgiving holiday.


County offices to close in honor of Veterans Day

The following York County offices will be closed Monday, November 11 in observance of the Veterans Day holiday:

Government Offices -   closed
Courts              -      closed
Libraries      -       closed
York-Poquoson Social Services    -  closed
Virginia Cooperative Extension      
Service in York County  -  open

Collection of garbage and recyclables will not be affected by the holiday. The compost facility, citizen drop-off centers and transfer station located on Goodwin Neck Road will be open, however the administrative offices of the Waste Management Center will be closed.
