View in browser  |  Get our newsletters Good Morning, Pennsylvania TUESDAY, AUG. 29, 2023 • TODAY'S WEATHER Maintaining the Lady  On a Fourth of July nearly 40 years ago, Lady Liberty went up in the Susquehanna River outside northern Dauphin County to mark the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor.   The replica was supposed to be taken down by Labor Day 1986 but was so popular, one of the builders said, they decided to leave it there. It's since been built and rebuilt in a more sturdy way, standing on a bridge abutment.    And this weekend, our Amy Worden writes, volunteers spiffed her up. Workers stripped away poison ivy and grape vines, gave her a fresh coat of paint and checked for cracks.   It's time to go past and give her a wave!   Now, let's take a look at this morning's headlines. In Pennsylvania, farmers are feeling the impact of droughts, floods, invasive pests and other events associated with climate change.   Typical weather?: An Adams County farmer says the global weather crisis has had no impact on his operation. "Every year the weather impacts us. It's either hot or cold, or sunny or cloudy," he said. "We haven't noticed any real difference in the last 30 years."   Hurricane forecast: Tropical Storm Idalia formed Sunday off the coast of Mexico. Florida is preparing for it to come ashore as a major hurricane.   Maui fire blame: Hawaii's electric utility acknowledged its power lines started a wildfire on Maui, but it faulted county firefighters for declaring the blaze contained and leaving the scene. A second wildfire broke out nearby and became the deadliest in the U.S. in more than a century. Read more Entertainment TSO to return: Trans-Siberian Orchestra will return to the Giant Center in Hershey for more holiday merriment. The group will present "The Ghosts of Christmas Eve - The Best of TSO & More" in two shows Dec. 15.   Kipona schedule: Kipona, Harrisburg's Labor Day festival, returns to Riverfront Park from Sept. 2-4 with activities that include an art fair, musical performances, children's events and a fireworks show.   Bret Michaels in town: Poison frontman and Pa. native Bret Michaels spent the day ahead of his Saturday show at Hollywood Casino volunteering at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, where his father is buried. The concert included local musicians.   Nickelback recap: Ask anyone about Nickelback, and there's a decent chance you'll hear a scoff. The Canadian rock band has become a bit of a punching bag, but it played to a stadium full of fans in Hershey Sunday. See also: The Head and the Heart perform in Harrisburg: photos Read more Emergency reports Gym owner charged: A Harrisburg personal trainer and gym owner broke into a Dauphin County home early Sunday and tried to kill his ex-partner and her boyfriend, police said.   Students killed: Two high school students were killed and a third was critically injured in a shooting in Braddock, western Pa., on Sunday.   Dog beaten: A German shepherd puppy is in the care of the York County SPCA to recover further less than a week after police found it severely beaten. No arrests have been made.   Fire truck crash: A Cumberland County fire truck went off a road and tipped over on its way to a house fire Sunday. See also: Dauphin County township rejects plan for soccer fields   COVID spread: The U.S. is seeing a summer uptick in COVID-19, due mostly to the spread of the highly contagious Eris subvariant. Here are the symptoms to watch for.   Views of candidates: President Joe Biden is "old" and "confused," and former President Donald Trump is "corrupt" and "dishonest." Those are among the top terms Americans use when they're asked to describe two of the candidates running for president next year.   Troopers' educations: To try to draw more candidates, the Pennsylvania State Police has removed college credit requirements for cadets, Gov. Josh Shapiro announced yesterday.
