The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and CSX Railroad have announced that both the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 17 (George Washington Memorial Highway) will be closed to vehicular traffic at the CSX rail crossing between Denbigh Boulevard and Fort Eustis Boulevard beginning Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 a.m.   Travel lanes are expected to be re-opened by 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 15.

The closure is necessary to allow CSX crews to install a concrete at-grade crossing to replace the rough, uneven and deteriorated crossing that has been a source of complaints by motorists for several years.   The work is being performed during the weekend to minimize the impact to traffic.  Short duration lane closures may also be required during off-peak travel hours on Monday, April 16 to allow final completion and clean-up.

The following detours and special traffic restrictions will be in place during the closure:

·       North and southbound truck traffic will be detoured around the closure via Fort Eustis Boulevard, Jefferson Avenue, and Denbigh Boulevard;

·       North and southbound passenger vehicle traffic will be detoured via Old York-Hampton Highway and Fort Eustis Boulevard extended;  Passenger vehicle traffic should also consider using Fort Eustis Blvd, rather than the southern segments of Route 17, for access to or from Newport News and Interstate 64;

·       Southbound through traffic on Old York-Hampton Highway will be blocked at the Allen Harris Drive / Old York Hampton Highway intersections;  Motorists who normally travel southbound beyond that point, such as those from the Settler's Crossing, Harris Grove or Marlbank areas, should use Battle Road or Hornsbyville Road as alternate routes;

·       Southbound traffic on Old York-Hampton Highway will not be allowed to turn left onto Redoubt Road or Freedom Boulevard, both of which are streets frequently used as a route between Old York-Hampton Highway and Goodwin Neck Road;

·       Traffic signals at the Route 17/Fort Eustis Boulevard and Route 17/Old York-Hampton Highway intersections will be re-timed to give priority to traffic following the detour routes;  VDOT will be monitoring and adjusting signal operations as necessary to optimize traffic flow;

·       All residences and businesses between Fort Eustis Boulevard and the CSX tracks and between Old York-Hampton Highway and the CSX tracks will continue to be accessible via Route 17 during the closure period.

Detour and portable message signs will be in place along Route 17 to alert motorists to the closure and to the alternate traffic routes and restrictions.

Motorists are encouraged to visit www.511Virginia.org , call 511 or listen to Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) 610 AM or call the Traffic Information Line at 757-361-3016 for current traffic and travel information.
