     A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in October.
     Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age.  The center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Route 17) and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  The center is closed all county holidays.
     Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  To register, stop by the center or call 898-3807.  For more information, please visit www.yorkcounty.gov/communityservices.
 
     Senior Center of York 2012 Annual Fundraiser, Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Come out and support this annual special event to include a white elephant sale, bake sale, craft fair, and prize drawings. Please bring your donated goods (except for clothing) to the center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Donations must be delivered by Friday, Oct. 5. Please tag items with suggested prices. Limited pickup may be available for anyone wishing to donate larger items. Bake sale items may be delivered Friday, Oct. 5 or on the day of the event at 8:30 a.m. For more information, call 898-3807.
 
     Scrapbooking & Halloween Cards, Monday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to noon.  Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make festive cards and assists you with your scrapbook.  You can also enjoy using the Cricut which helps to design your cards.  These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for your loved ones.  Note:  Please limit to four cards.
  
     Flu Shot Registration, Monday, Oct. 8 beginning at 9 a.m. Remember to mark your calendarsto register for your annual flu shot. Please call 898-3807 or stop by the Senior Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway to reserve a time slot for your free shot. Time slots will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, and York County residents will have priority. The flu shots will be administered on Friday, October 26 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. No fee or Medicare billing will be involved.
 
     AARP Driver Safety Program, Oct. 15 & Oct. 16. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, Oct. 15 from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is now $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members.Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
 
     International Day, Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 11:30 a.m. In honor of United Nations Day, let's celebrate our diverse cultures with a variety of cuisines! Come dressed in cultural attire and be entered into a contest to win a prize. Lunch will be served at noon. The fee for this event will be $3. In order to obtain an accurate food count, please register by Oct. 22 for this program. In keeping with the theme, we will play music from various countries around the world.
 
     Oktoberfest Birthday Bash, Friday, Oct. 26 at 1 p.m. Get into the spirit of the Munich Oktoberfest with Entertainer Dan Smith. Mr. Smith will perform a variety of German and Bavarian folk and polka songs. Remember you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to come celebrate with us. Cake and beverage served. Please register for this program by Oct. 24 by calling 898-3807.
 
     Health Day, "Medicare Check-up" Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 12:45 p.m. Each year Medicare Part D Plans may have cost and coverage changes, so it is important that you review your plan during the open enrollment period that begins Oct. 15 and continues through Dec. 7. Lisa Walker with the Virginia Insurance Counseling Assistance Program will give an overview of 2013 changes and answer your questions on Medicare and Medicare Part D. She will also discuss benefit programs you may be eligible for to help pay Medicare deductibles and premiums. The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program (VICAP) is a free program that assists consumers with medical benefit issues with Medicare, Medicaid, medical bill paying and long-term care insurance. Registration for this program is due by Oct., so be sure to call the Senior Center at 898-3807.
           
     Computer General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk. Please note computer classes will be in session on Tuesdays.Feel free to call us at 898-3807 for more information.
 
     Calling Veterans! If you served in WWII and would be willing to be a part of a panel discussion to share your experiences at one of our Culture Days, please drop by our front desk and complete a brief form. Thank you!
 
     Inclement weather?  Check out the Senior Center's hotline - 890-3516 - for information on emergencies, closings and/or delays due to inclement weather.
 
            Upcoming Event
Senior Center's 21st Anniversary Open House, Friday, Nov. 16 from 1 to 3 pm. In honor of 21 years, this year we will celebrate center volunteers and patrons by holding a fair of our activities! Be sure to drop in and see firsthand all the programs and events the center offers. There will be a brief program at 1 p.m. followed by demonstrations, displays, and exhibits. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP between Oct. 22 and Nov. 14. Call 898-3807 for more information.
 
     Note:  The Dining Club will be closed on Wednesday, October 17.
     Note:  In observance of Yorktown Day, the Senior Center will be closed on Friday, October 19.
