Senior Safety Summit set for October 17, registration ends October 1

     The Peninsula Seniors and Law Enforcement Together Council will conduct its Annual Senior Safety Summit at Northside Christian Church in Yorktown on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
     The keynote speaker will be the Honorable Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Other speakers and topics are: Be Scam Smart: They Want Your Money - Captain Steve Duke, President of the Hampton Roads Crime Prevention Association; What Would You Do? - Sabrina Strylowski, Hampton Fire Department; In the Drivers Seat: Senior Driver Safety – Karl Hoffman, Driver Rehabilitation Specialist with the Center for Excellence in Aging and Geriatric Health. 
     In addition, there will be a presentation about local Triad programs, a fashion show by the Fashion Elegante's Modeling Club, door prizes, and more than 30 exhibitors to answer your questions. 
     The day will begin with a free shredding event from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. in the church parking lot, compliments of Stealth Shredding. Bring old papers and mail to shred and lessen your chance of becoming a victim of fraud. A continental breakfast and registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by the opening ceremony at 9 a.m.
     The registration fee which includes lunch is $6 and the registration deadline is Oct. 1. No money will be accepted on the day of the summit. Northside Christian Church is located at 1300 George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown (accessed by either Emerson Lane or Coventry Blvd.). 
     The Senior Safety Summit is a joint community effort of the local Police Departments, Sheriff's Offices, AARP, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Foster Grandparent Program, York County Community Services, Humana, Transitions Family Violence Services, and Newport News Parks, Recreation, and Tourism.
