"Over 60% of Americans have had personal data breached: U.S. News" When we saw that headline, we were surprised that it wasn't 99%. Ask around: How many people do you know who've had their financial, social media, email or any other online info stolen? The U.S. News survey was done with about 1,200 U.S. adults, who answered questions on topics ranging from passwords to compromised data. About 61% said, yep, their data had been breached; 44% said it had happened more than once. If your identity is stolen, here's what to do, according to the Federal Trade Commission: Report the breach to any appropriate company, such as your bank, retailer, credit card holder, driver's licence center or Social Security office; check and lock your credit reports; change your passwords and don't use the same passwords for multiple accounts; and add two-factor authorization to your social and other accounts. Finally, commiserate with the other two-thirds of society that's gone through it as well. |
