If you haven't already, take time to read our Ivey DeJesus' story on "sundown towns" and central Pennsylvania's part in encouraging the racist practice of keeping Black people out of certain towns. We'd suggest you not dismiss it as bringing up old hurts: Racism isn't gone. Sundown towns and other levels of segregation didn't happen only in the South ages ago. For example, a Black Harrisburg man who grew up in the 1960s told Ivey he heard warnings every time the William Penn High School football team was set to play Cedar Cliff in the less diverse Cumberland County: "The older men used to say 'don't get caught up there after the game. You might get into trouble. They might try to arrest you.'" Ivey wrote: "Across communities in central Pennsylvania, Black residents were made to feel unwelcome in many communities, especially after dark, and in many cases the communities were their own." |
