Smoke detectors previously installed by fire fighters save woman's life

March 19, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

While York County Fire and Life Safety units were on scene at a residence on Cattail Lane last month, firefighters noticed that there were no working smoke detectors in the house.

Knowing that to be an unsafe condition, the firefighters immediately got permission from the resident to install smoke detectors. They installed two in the house, testing the alarms to make sure they were working properly before leaving the scene.

Those two smoke alarms most likely saved the life of the resident, who awoke to the alarms going off last Friday, March 16, and immediately evacuated the house.

York County firefighters were quickly on scene responding to the report of a house fire. When they got on scene, firefighters made entry into the structure and found heavy smoke and fire conditions within the building. After extinguishing the flames, it was determined that the fire started in the kitchen area. The fire remains under investigation.

In talking with those on scene, the occupant indicated that the newly installed smoke detectors woke her and alerted her to the fire, allowing for her escape.

For more information about smoke detector installations, call the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety at 890-3600.
