Senior Center of York Announces March Events

A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in March. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. The Center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rte. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Center is closed all County Holidays. Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, stop by the Center or call 898-3807. Scrapbooking & Greeting Cards, Monday, March 11 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make beautiful cards and assists you with your scrapbook. These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for loved ones. Note: Please limit to four cards. Computer Classes and General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities. Classes are currently held on Tuesdays in the lab. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk. The next set of six-week computer classes will begin on Tuesday, March 12, in Beginning Computer, Intermediate (Microsoft Word 10) and E-mail/Internet. Culture Day, "World of Celtic Music," Wednesday, March 13 at 1 p.m. Folk Singer and Entertainer Bob Zentz will enlighten us with an array of Celtic folklore. Mr. Zentz will also play numerous musical instruments and lead the group in an enjoyable sing-a-long. Refreshments will be served. Registration will begin on March 1.
"Tax Relief & Filing Assistance for the Elderly and/or Disabled," Wednesday, March 13 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Staff from the office of the York County Commissioner of the Revenue will be available to offer assistance with completing the application for this tax relief program available to real estate owners residing in York County. To be eligible, an applicant must either be at least 65 years old or permanently and totally disabled, and also must be a York County homeowner who resides in the dwelling. Applications must be filed by April 1. Call the Senior Center at 898-3807 to sign-up.
Let's Go to the Movies, Friday, March 15 at 1 p.m. In the spirit of success and entrepreneurism, the York County Library and the Senior Center will present the 2006 American biographical drama film, "The Pursuit of Happyness."(PG 13) This moving film is based on a true story about salesman turned stockbroker Chris Gardner, and his challenges as a father, and in finding a professional career. Directed by Gabriele Muccino, this movie features Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. Popcorn and beverage served. Please call 898-3807 by March 14 to register.
AARP Driver Safety Program, Monday, March 18 & Tuesday, March 19. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, March 18, from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, March 19, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members. Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.
Health Day, "EVMS CARES: Health Information at Your Fingertips," Wednesday, March 20 at 12:45 p.m. Join Ruth Smith, Outreach Services Coordinator at EVMS as she talks about how to access current, reliable and accurate consumer health information on the web. To register, call the Senior Center of York at 898-3807 by March 19.
English Tea, Wednesday, March 27 at 1 p.m. You are cordially invited to an afternoon tea with us. Norah Steele will give the history of etiquette, English china, and teas detailing the difference between afternoon and "high teas." Light refreshments will be provided. This event is brought to you by Plantiques Gift Shop in Newport News. Registration will conclude March 22 or until space is filled.
March Birthday Bash, Friday, March 29 at 1 p.m. Come enjoy "Music by Jon Durfee." Entertainer Mr. Durfee will play keyboards, banjo and have a sing-a-long. Broadway tunes and songs of the 50's and 60's will be featured. Cake and beverage will be served. Remember, you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to attend. March and April birthdays will be recognized at this bash. Please register by March 28 by calling 898-3807.

Annual Senior Health & Safety Fair, Friday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's not too early to mark your calendar! Free health screenings will include cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and height screenings, and a diabetes risk assessment provided by Sentara Community Health and Prevention. The York Lion's Club will offer free vision and hearing screenings and the Orthopaedic & Spine Center will provide bone density screenings. Other service organizations will be on hand to answer questions and provide information to help you maintain a healthy and independent lifestyle. Additionally, there will be several lectures, refreshments, door prizes, and a light lunch. Call the Senior Center at 898-3807 for more information. Registration begins for the free screenings on April 1.

Learn How to Play Disc Golf at New Quarter Park on March 9

Join area disc golf enthusiasts at New Quarter Park on Saturday, March 9, from 10 a.m. to noon to learn all you ever wanted to know about disc golf and more.
Similar to golf, the object of disc golf is to complete each hole in as few throws – or strokes – as possible. Instead of using golf clubs and balls, disc golfers throw a flying disc to navigate fairways. Every hole starts at a tee and ends once the disc lands in the "hole" (a disc-catching basket). While disc golf can be played with just one golf disc, many discs have been designed to fly with special characteristics. Different discs can be used to hook and curve around obstacles, roll on the ground, or fly over trees.
The nationally celebrated 18-hold York County Parks and Recreation course weaves in and out of the park's mature forest, dips down into ravines, crosses open meadows, and bypasses a Civil War redoubt as well as one of the largest tulip poplar trees in Virginia. New Quarter Park is a great location to learn and play this popular sport and a pro shop in the park office supplies all the equipment a player needs. Spend some time with the park's professional golfers to learn the rules and try your hand at the game.
New Quarter Park is located in upper York County between Cheatham Annex and the Queens Lake neighborhood. Follow the Colonial Parkway to the Queens Lake exit and turn right at the bottom of the ramp. Travel a short distance and turn onto Lakeshead Drive. Follow Lakeshead for two miles to the park gate, then one more mile to the parking lot and park office.
