Senior Safety Summit; Diabetes Self-Management Program; Youth Basketball

Senior Safety Summit scheduled for October 23

September 30, 2013

The Peninsula Seniors and Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) Council will conduct its Annual Senior Safety Summit on Wednesday, October 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Northside Christian Church, 1300 George Washington Memorial Highway, Yorktown.  The $6.00 registration fee includes lunch.  The deadline for registration is October 9 and no money will be accepted on the day of the Summit.  Register now by calling 595-9037.
This year's theme - "Seniors Standing Strong" - exemplifies the S.A.L.T Council's commitment to promote awareness of scams, fraud and identity theft.  Topics will include Crimes Against Seniors, Protecting Your Assets, Medication Safety and Interactions, The Case of the Missing Money and Protecting Virginia's Most Vulnerable Citizens. 
A free shred event will start the Summit from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the church parking lot, compliments of Stealth Shredding.  Bring your old papers and mail to shred and lessen your chance of becoming a victim of identity theft. 
Summit check-in and a continental breakfast begin at 8 a.m.  Over 30 exhibitors will be on location.  Also, beginning at 8 a.m. Rite Aid pharmacy will be administering flu shots on a first-come, first-served basis. Your Medicare card is required for proper billing. The out-of-pocket cost will be $29.99, payable in cash only.
In partnership with the AARP Hunger Drive, the S.A.L.T. Council is collecting non-perishable food items to help combat hunger in our communities.  You can help by bringing items and dropping them in our collection box when you check in.
The Senior Safety Summit is a joint community effort of the local Police Departments, Sheriff's Offices, AARP, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Foster Grandparent Program, York County Community Services, Humana, Transitions Family Violence Services, and Newport News Parks, Recreation, and Tourism.

Diabetes Self-Management Program Offered at Senior Center

A free six-week Diabetes Self-Management Program will be offered at the Senior Center of York from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Tuesdays beginning October 22 and continuing through November 26.
The Diabetes Self-Management Program was devised through research performed by the School of Medicine at Stanford University and is being offered at no cost to participants.  Sessions are interactive and teach the skills needed for day to day management of diabetes.  Information on menu planning, proper diet, carbohydrate intake, blood sugar levels, stress, exercise and relaxation are just a few of the topics that will be covered.
The program is co-sponsored by the Virginia Department of Health, Peninsula Health District, the Peninsula Agency on Aging and York County Community Services.

Registration for Winter Youth Basketball begins October 21

Registration for York County's Winter Youth Basketball program will be open Monday, October 21, through Friday, November 1.  Registrations will be accepted on Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Parks and Recreation office, 100 County Drive, just off Goodwin Neck Road in the Grafton area.  As an after-hours convenience, registrations will also be taken at the Tabb Library on Wednesday, October 30 from 4 to 7 p.m.  New this year is the opportunity to register on-line as well.  Please call 890-3500 or e-mail parksandrec@yorkcounty.gov to set up your new on-line registration account. 
The program is open to all York County residents in grades 2-12.  The registration fee is $45 for the first child and $40 for any additional children per family.  Registration flyers are available beginning the week of October 14 at all York County Public Schools, the York County Public Library's locations in Tabb and Yorktown, and the Parks and Recreation office.  Youth Basketball registration forms can also be found on-line at www.yorkcounty.gov/parksandrec.
