Senior Center of York Announces September Events

 A variety of educational and entertaining programs are being offered at the Senior Center of York in September. Participation is open to seniors age 55 or better and their spouses, regardless of age. The Center is located in the Washington Square Shopping Center at 5314 George Washington Memorial Highway (Rte. 17), and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Center is closed all County Holidays.  Reservations are required for all sessions and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up now for the next Body Recall Exercise Session, September 4 through November 18.   We are taking registrations for Body Recall, an invigorating group exercise with certified Instructor Domenica Jernigan.  Classes are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, September 4 through November 18 and meet three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  Class times are 9 a.m., 10 a.m., and 11 a.m.  The cost for this 10-week session is $60.  Please call 898-3807 for more information on Body Recall.  
          
           AARP Hunger Drive, September 8-15.  In partnership with AARP and area Triads across the state, the York-Poquoson Triad is collecting current non-perishable food items at the Senior Center during the week of September 8-15. You can help combat hunger in our communities by bringing items and dropping them in our collection box. Triad is a cooperative agreement between the Office of the Attorney General, the Sheriff's Office, senior citizens and senior organizations.  Triad promotes crime prevention and seeks to improve the quality of life for seniors in our community. 

           Scrapbooking & Greeting Cards, Monday, September 9 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Join us as Cathy Fowler of Creative Memories shows how to make beautiful cards and assists you with your scrapbook.  These cards and your personalized scrapbook create lasting memories and make wonderful gifts for loved ones.  Note: Please limit to four cards.  For more information and to register please call 898-3807.

           York-Poquoson Triad Sponsors "The Facts About Reverse Mortgages," Tuesday, September 10 at 10 a.m.  A reverse mortgage enables older homeowners (62+) to convert part of the equity in their homes into tax-free income without having to sell the home, give up the title, or take on a new monthly mortgage payment.  Join Linda Wheeler, with Reverse Mortgage Pro, as she will explain how a reverse mortgage works, some common myths, and how to avoid scams associated with reverse mortgages. To register, call the Senior Center at 898-3807 by September 9.  Refreshments will be provided by Colonial Harbor Retirement Community. 
                 
                 Swap Exchange & Coffee, Monday, September 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
 September is "Swap Ideas and Coffee Month," so we are inviting you to drop in and bring in an item to swap such as a coupon, a good recipe, a funny joke, a sports trading card or great idea, and tell us what it means to you.  Also feel free to enjoy donuts and coffee provided by Starbucks. Please register by September 13.

           Computer Classes to Begin Tuesday, September 17. We are now accepting registrations for our 6-week computer classes.  There will be a Beginner's Class from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., an Intermediate class (Microsoft Word 10) from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and an E-mail Internet Class from 3 to 4:30 p.m.  Space is limited for these classes.
        
           AARP Driver Safety Program, Monday, September 23 and Tuesday, September 24. This program is designed for drivers age 50 or better, and will take place on Monday, September 23 from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m. and Tuesday, September 24 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for this two-day program is $12 for members of AARP and $14 for non-members. Fees should be paid by check and made out to AARP. Class registration may be made in person at the Senior Center, by phone, or by mail. Note: AARP membership, which cannot be processed the day of a class, is not required for class registration. There is no "behind the wheel" driving performed in this program. Drivers age 55 or better must attend both classes to receive the state mandated three-year automobile insurance reduction. Many insurance companies are giving insurance reductions to drivers age 50+ with the same attendance requirements. Those less than age 55 should check with their insurance company to see if they are entitled to the three-year insurance reduction. Class enrollment is limited to 25.

Culture Day, "Impressions of Vietnam," Tuesday, September 24 at 1 p.m.  Patron Judy McDowell will give a poignant account of her recent travels to this southeastern Asian country.  She will present pictures in a slide show on current life for the various classes of people.  Refreshments will be served. Please register for this event by September 23.
           Health Day, "Common Eye Problems," Wednesday, September 25 at 12:45 p.m.  Many eye diseases have no early symptoms.  For example, they may be painless, and you may not notice a change in your vision until the disease has become quite advanced.  Dr. Brian McKee of James River Eye Physicians will provide an informative talk concerning some of the more common eye problems that may develop as we age.  His topics will include cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration.  For more information and to register, call the Senior Center at 898-3807 by Tuesday, September 24. 
             September Birthday Bash, Friday, September 27 at 1 p.m.   Join us once again for "Music by Jon Durfee."  Mr. Durfee offers wonderful entertainment playing keyboards, banjo, and performing show tunes and a medley of songs from the 50's and 60's.  Cake and beverage will be served.  Remember you do not have to be celebrating a birthday to attend. Please register for this bash by September 26.

Computers and General Use. The computers are available for general use Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. unless the lab is reserved for programmed activities.  Please note that beginning on Tuesday, September 17, classes will be held in the lab. To use the computers you must sign in at the Senior Center front desk. 

Mark Your Calendar:

In Observance of Labor Day, the Senior Center of York will be closed on Monday, September 2.

Senior Center of York 2013 Annual Fundraiser, Saturday, October 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This annual special event includes a white elephant sale, bake sale, craft fair, and prize drawings. Beginning September 16, please bring your donated goods (except for clothing) to the Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Please tag items with suggested prices.  Limited pickup may be available for anyone wishing to donate larger items.  Prepackaged Bake Sale items may be delivered Friday, October 11 or on the day of the event at 8:30 a.m. Note:  Bake sale items must not be potentially hazardous foods, meaning that they must not need either refrigeration or heating.  And again, food items must already be packaged and ready for sale when delivered to the Center.

"Skate, Rattle & Roll" Program Returns to Dare Elementary Sept. 6

YORKTOWN – Roller skating family fun returns Friday nights to the Dare Elementary School Gymnasium on September 6.  The County's popular "Skate, Rattle & Roll" program will begin the new school year with the following two weekly sessions on Fridays:
Session 1:  6:30 – 8:30 p.m. for Family & Elementary School participants (Grades K-5th)  
Session 2:  9:00 – 11:00 p.m. for Middle School participants (Grades 6-8)
 Admission is $5.00 per session and includes skates.  Rollerblade (or Inline) skate rental costs $3.00.  Sodas and snack food are also available for sale.

The York County Board of Supervisors is currently seeking applications from County citizens interested in serving on the York County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.  The York County Parks and Recreation Advisory Board serves as an advisory board to the Board of Supervisors on the needs of citizens for parks and recreational services. The Board meets the third Thursday, bi-monthly at night.
