York County Civil War art on display Veterans Day weekend
November 1, 2011
FOR RELEASE AT WILL
A special exhibit of Civil War-era art will be on display at the York County Historical Museum's Museum on Main, 408 Main Street, in historic Yorktown, during Veterans Day weekend, Nov. 11-13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The exhibit, a joint project of the museum and the York County Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Committee, depicts various scenes of York County during the Civil War, and it is believed that the display offers virtually all of the known pieces of art from York County during that period.
The exhibit opened on Oct. 8 and received almost 200 visitors on Yorktown Day, Oct. 19.
Featured in the exhibit are reproductions of sketches, paintings and watercolors created by numerous well-known Civil War artists such as Alfred Waud, Winslow Homer, William McIlvaine, and others. Of particular interest is the only known artist's depiction of Confederate forces in Yorktown.
Even though the museum is closed for the season, it will reopen Veterans Day weekend for this special event. After 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, the exhibit will not be available for viewing again until the fall of 2012. It is one of numerous projects developed by the York County Sesquicentennial Committee to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.
For more information, call 757-890-3508.
