Free Pruning Clinics; Indoor activities in historic Yorktown

 

York County Extension Office Offers FREE On-Site Pruning Clinics

     February (a dormant month) is the best time to prune ornamentals. By pruning, you improve the plant's health, thus reducing the needs for pesticides and improving water quality. The York County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension is offering free pruning clinics to assist homeowners through hands-on learning.

  • February 16,   10 a.m. - noon at Taylor's Do-It-Best, Poquoson
  • February 23, 10 a.m. – noon at Ken Matthews Garden Center (Rt. 17)

Visit Historic Yorktown for Indoor Events

     Historic Yorktown offers plenty of indoor activities to keep you entertained through the winter with art galleries, museums, literary teas, wine dinners and much more. 
     Come and enjoy the mixed media art show at the Gallery at York Hall and relish in the revolving exhibit of fine art in all media by local artists both for display and sale. Winter hours are Tues, Thurs, and Sat from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments may also be made by calling 757-890-4490. Don't miss the other Yorktown galleries and antique shops to include Black Dog Gallery, Nancy Thomas Gallery, Redcoat Antiques, and Swan Tavern Antiques, all open this winter season.
     Although the Cabin Fever Concert Series at the Yorktown Freight Shed sold out quickly, don't miss Literary High Teas at Carrot Tree and enjoy a delightful high tea featuring silk sachet teas; scones & biscuits; petite quiche; tea sandwiches; and dessert plates. Each month features a different guest speaker.      The remaining winter monthly high tea lectures are as follows:
  • February 27th, Jeff Toalson, Editor Mama, I Am Yet Still Alive, Composite Diary of 1863 in the Confederacy
  • March 27th, Justin Pantzer, Harney & Son's, The History of Tea
Retreat to the indoors at the Yorktown Victory Center, where gallery exhibits chronicle the experiences of ordinary men and women during the American Revolution.  In an adjacent children's discovery area, youngsters can try on 18th-century-style clothing. Outdoors now through Feb. 15, explore the re-created Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm on 60-minute guided tours offered hourly from 10:05 a.m. to 4:05 p.m.
     Dine on the banks of the York River at Riverwalk Restaurant, serving regional seafood, steaks, poultry and seasonal dishes. The bar serves the full restaurant menu plus a Tapas Bar Menu beginning at 4 pm each day. Closed Mondays through February 28. Don't miss the Valentine's 3-day Dinner Special Feb. 14 – 16 and treat yourself to a four course scrumptious dinner. Call 757-875-1522 for reservations. 
     Yorktown Battlefield and Visitor Center remains open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tours provided based on personnel availability and the three historic homes (Nelson, Moore & Poor Potter) and Quartermaster lodge open based on volunteer availability. Tour roads are open at 6 AM and close at dusk.
