FOR RELEASE AT WILL
The York County Public Library was recently honored by the Virginia Public Library Directors Association (VPLDA) for having the most "Outstanding Young Adult Program" in communities serving a population between 50,000 and 99,000. Presented on April 25 at the VPLDA annual meeting, this statewide award recognized the Operation Gratitude Book Sale program sponsored by the library's Teen Advisory Board.
This past winter the Teen Advisory Board organized a book drive and hosted a book sale on February 16 to aid Operation Gratitude in the cost of shipping care packages. Operation Gratitude sends care packages filled with snacks, entertainment items and personal letters of appreciation to U.S. Service Members deployed in hostile regions, to their children left behind and to Veterans, First Responders, Wounded Warriors and their care givers. At the book sale over 1,000 books were sold earning over $300 which will cover the postage of 21 care packages.
"We are honored to receive this award," said Kevin Smith, York County Public Library Director. "The Teen Advisory Board members and their advisor, Amy Hendricks, are to be commended for their hard work and for making the Library a focal point for community outreach."
