Yorktown Battlefield (map)
Tactical demonstrations, encampments and a Confederate field hospital interpret the role Yorktown played during the Peninsula Campaign. Yorktown Battlefield (map)
The Civil War 150 HistoryMobile is an interactive "museum on wheels" housed in a 53' expandable tractor-trailer. The HistoryMobile draws together stories from all over Virginia and uses state-of-the-art technology and immersive exhibit spaces to present individual stories of the Civil War from theperspectives of those who experienced it—young and old, enslaved and free, soldiers and civilians. Yorktown Battlefield (map)
Kevin Knapp, retired Army Officer, professional balloon pilot, and Civil War Balloon Corps enthusiast will share separate presentations on how balloons were used for observation and surveillance by both the North and the South. His presentations, occurring on the hour, will include the complete history of balloon operations from their first appearance 1861 to the end of the Balloon Corps in 1863 and will place special emphasis on balloon operations during the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. Grace Episcopal Church, 111 Church Street, Yorktown (map)
150 years ago, in April and May 1862, Union General George B. McClellan led the Army of the Potomac, 126,000 Northern volunteers, from Fortress Monroe to Yorktown where the Confederates, commanded by General John Magruder, had already established a defensive line. Grace Church was within the area first controlled by the Confederates and then by Union forces. The Union forces remained in Yorktown throughout the Civil War. Riverwalk Landing (map)
Yorktown, an affiliate port with OpSail 2012 Virginia™ , is the setting for Yorktown Maritime Weekend Friday through Sunday, June 1-3 at Riverwalk Landing. Three days of waterfront celebration are planned. The Spirit of Bermuda, LYNX "America's Privateer" Bold and Jamestown Settlement's Godspeed will be open for public tours at Riverwalk Landing from 10 a.m., to 4 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, and will all join a parade of sail in the York River from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Don't miss out on the 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. day sails or enjoy a sunset sail (tickets required) on Yorktown's home ported ship, the Schooner Alliance. Additionally, visitors can purchase Adventure Sail tickets aboard visiting tall ship LYNX "America's Privateer" Bold(tickets required) on Saturday and Sunday. Other weekend events and activities will range from a maritime themed market, static displays, ceremonies, educational programs, Adopt a Ship, free concerts and much more on the Yorktown waterfront. Free parking and trolley transportation provided throughout the weekend. Co-sponsored by the Yorktown Tall Ships committee and York County. Family fun and free to the public activities.
