Yorktown Market Days; 4-H Club Chrysanthemum class for youth

 

Yorktown Market Days launches season May 12 with Fitness Market

     The 6th Annual Yorktown Market Days season kicks off next Saturday, May 12, along the Yorktown waterfront at Riverwalk Landing between Buckner and Ballard Streets. 
     The market will operate Saturdays, May 12 through Sept. 15, and monthly markets will be held on Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 15, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. with extended hours until 3 p.m. in Oct., Nov. and Dec.
     The market is free and features seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh seafood, eggs, poultry, beef and pork; fresh breads, cheeses, baked goods, peanuts, cut flowers, organic and gluten free products, potted plants, coffee, jams and jellies; quality art and live musical entertainment.
     The market hosts more than 35 local farmers, producers and vendors throughout the season with a variety of homegrown favorites. The market also hosts over 20 local artists this season, with four to seven featured artists appearing each week. Throughout the summer, the market will feature a variety of entertainment.      The Fifes and Drums of York Town will kick off the first market of the season with a performance, followed by entertainment at 9 a.m. with music by Lana Puckett and Kim Person, who will entertain guests with their repertoire of folk and country music. 
     For the opening market, York County Parks and Recreation will host the 2nd Annual Fitness market, a program to support improving the quality of life for residents by educating citizens about the importance of healthy living and highlighting tools available to make healthy lifestyle choices.
     Shop the market and make your way to the fitness section for exercise classes, numerous vendors, health screenings such as spine/posture screenings and body composition, and free giveaways all tying in with the farmers market. Participating exhibitors include: York County Parks and Recreation, Riverside Wellness & Fitness Center, Riverside Adult Day Care, Riverside Cancer Services, Tidewater Performance, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Yorktown Boys & Girls Club, NASA/Langley Exchange Skywatchers Astronomy Club, York County Beautification, Home Helpers & Direct Link, Visiting Angels, Charney Chiropractic Back Rehab & Wellness and Walgreens.
     Don't miss the healthy cooking demonstrations provided by Riverwalk Restaurant at 9:30 and 11:30 am. Additional activities include solar viewing and grow your own vegetable garden demonstrations.

8:30 a.m.         Zumba demonstration with Stacey Zebrowski
9 a.m.              Beginner Yoga demonstration with Shannon Moore
10 a.m.            Line Dancing with Good Time Dancers
10:30 a.m.       Body Recall with Domenica Jernigan and Company
     Free parkingwill be available at the market in several public parking areas throughout Historic Yorktown. The free Yorktown trolley runs daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.

4-H Club to teach growing mums for profit class

     The York County Cooperative Extension Office will once again hold its annual 4-H chrysanthemum growing class this summer.
The award-winning 4-H Chrysanthemum Project combines the skills of growing plants with the knowledge of how to account for, market, and sell a "product."
     Youth ages 10 to 15 will receive materials to grow 20 chrysanthemums and will attend five educational sessions (one hour each) throughout the summer. Classes will meet May 31, June 14, June 28, July 12, and Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Luke's Methodist Church on Ella Taylor Road.
     Space in this program is limited to 20 participants. Application and registration fee of $10 must be received before the first class. Registration forms are available by calling 890-4940 and can be found online at www.yorkcounty.gov/vce.
